Konvicka’s Setting Helps Lady Lions to Perfect Record, Fayette Co. Player of the Week Honors

Fayetteville senior volleyball player Mattie Konvicka has contributed in all aspects for the undefeated Lady Lions. In recent games against Weimar and Palacios High Schools, she recorded 29 assists in each game. “Huge role on the team being a setter,” said Fayetteville head volleyball coach Clint Jaeger. “First year being the setter full-time and just stepping up into that role and doing it well. Someone’s got to run the offense. We got some really good hitters, but if we can’t get them the ball, it doesn’t mean a whole lot. She’s doing a good job of running the offense and getting us going.” Konvicka’s awareness to set up her team has led her to a nomination for this edition’s Player of the Week.

Question: What’s it like having this much success as a team?

Answer: “To be honest, it’s kind of shocking. Last year, we had a really good team as well, but this year we’ve done so much better. I don’t really know how to describe it because it’s been amazing watching us work together as a team.”

Question: How do you handle the responsibilities of being a senior?

Answer: “I find it kind of awesome to have these younger girls under me. Some of them may look up to me as setting or something, but I just try to lead them as much as I can. As much as they will let me.”

Question: Do you have any interest of playing volleyball at the next level?

Answer: “I haven’t really thought about it, but probably not. I don’t think that would fit me at all.”

Question: What’s your favorite cartoon show?

Answer: “Probably Spongebob. I’ve always loved Spongebob.”

Question: If you could travel to one place outside of the country, where would it be?

Answer: “I would love to go to Italy and see the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I just find that all so interesting.”

Question: What’s your best subject in school?

Answer: “I’d probably say history. It’s always been super easy concept for me.”

Question: Who’s a celebrity you would hang out with?

Answer: “Probably Alex Bregman. He’s my favorite alltime baseball player.”

Question: How does volleyball challenge you as a player and person?

Answer: “I feel like it challenges me by the way of being a leader on the court and then outside of the volleyball world, also being a leader students in the school can look up to for advice or help. That’s the same thing I want to do on the court as well.”

Question: If you could have your dream car, what would it be?

Answer: “I’ve always said I wanted a Tesla, so I’ll say that.”

Question: What do you like the most about the city of Fayetteville?

Answer: “I like how small it is and that everyone knows each other. We all cheer each other on in sports and such.”

Konvicka brings an essential need to Fayetteville volleyball in knowing when to make the right play for her teammates, which has been a big reason for the team’s dominance.
