Keslyn Davis Leading Lady Leps’ Drive to a District Basketball Title

Keslyn Davis

La Grange senior basketball player Keslyn Davis has been putting her senior leadership on display by fueling her team to an undefeated start in district play about halfway through the season, all while playing through a knee injury.

Davis is the returning district MVP in basketball and could also be found inside the Lep mascot costume on the sidelines during football games.

“She’s just been one of those girls that’s been a leader,” said La Grange head girls basketball coach Heath Golan. “Definitely puts the team first. She’s one of those girls that you can count on to get along with everybody. I think she’s just more relaxed this year and just playing the way she’s capable of. You can tell that she’s leading us in quite a few things as far as statistics go. It just shows that she’s stepping up after Aysia (Grant) graduated last year. It’s been a good surprise to see.”

Davis’ drive and determination while also producing solid numbers has made her our selection for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.

Question: What’s it like being one of the leaders on the team?

Answer: “It’s very rewarding. It’s a huge role to fill. I’ve watched some leaders the past two years I’ve been on varsity and I do my best to fill the shoes the best I can and make sure everyone’s having fun on the court.”

Question: What are your goals for the 2023 season?

Answer: “As a team, my goal is definitely to make to round three of district because that’s the farthest that, personally, I have been. My sophomore year we went and were area champs, so definitely to get to that spot again would be amazing.”

Question: Who’s your most interesting teammate?

Answer: “I have to go with Camille Gonzalez. She is always goofy and always just brings some kind of entertainment to every practice and game.”

Question: Where’s a place or town you like to go to other than La Grange?

Answer: “I like to go to Austin. I lived in Austin for nine years of my life, so it feels like home still going there. There’s a lot to do and it’s always fun.”

Question: What was your favorite part about being the team mascot?

Answer: “Being mascot, it’s just always so fun. I get to put on a whole new identity and just be goofy and there’s no consequences.”

Question: If you had to give advice to someone about being a mascot, what would you tell them?

Answer: “Just be yourself, be confident, and if you’re debating doing it or not, just do it because it’s gonna be the most fun you’ve ever had.”

Question: How does basketball impact your life?

Answer: “Basketball has impacted my life forever. I don’t remember not playing basketball. I’ve been playing since I was little, so it’s very just comforting and none of my problems are there anymore when I play basketball.”

Question: If you could meet up with one person and have a conversation with them, who would it be and why?

Answer: “I would like to meet up with Zendaya because she seems like a very cool celebrity and I heard she’s very nice to her fans. I’m a huge fan of hers.”

Question: Who’s your favorite point guard in college or pro basketball and why?

Answer: “My favorite point guard is LaMelo Ball for the Hornets. I’ve just loved watching him since he was young.”

Question: What’s a unique trait about the town of La Grange?

Answer: “La Grange, everything feels like home. Everybody knows everybody. You can’t go to the square, HEB, or Walmart without seeing somebody you know, so it feels like home.”

Davis’ contributions have been essential for a surging Lady Leps team.
