Hunt Excelling at Bethel College

Despite injuries earlier this season, Aaliyah Hunt has given the Bethel College (Kan.) women’s basketball team productive minutes.

The sophomore out of La Grange High School said she sprained her ankle during a practice before the opener, and she also dealt with back spasms. Though since recovered from each, they cost her time on the court. She appeared in 21 of the first 29 games and averaged 7.3 minutes per game.

Hunt, who has played point guard and forward, has entered games from the bench. “My coaches tell me to bring a lot of energy and defensive intensity,” she said. “Guarding on the ball and getting stops.”

She had season highs of four points and two steals, which led the team, during a loss at Bethany. The 5-foot-4 Hunt converted two free throws after being fouled while making a defensive rebound and later scored on a layup after stealing the ball.

She typically guards the point guard whether the team is in man or zone defense. Because the team has a new coach this season, the defensive scheme has changed. “We’re playing more how I played in high school, with more aggression,” she said.

Hunt had a season-high three rebounds in two games, including one when she played a season-high 24 minutes and had three points.

She said she has improved the most in her ball handling. She had nine assists, including one in four consecutive games. “I’ve started to really control my pace,” she said.
