Hoops Star Sodek Awarded One of TWU’s Top Academic Scholarships

Flatonia High School senior Summer Sodek was awarded one of Texas Woman’s University’s top academic scholarships during a surprise presentation at the high school on Monday, May 4.

TWU’s Chancellor’s Endowed Scholarship, which covers tuition, fees and other costs for four years ― and is valued at roughly $60,000 ― is considered the university’s most coveted and among its highest valued scholarships. It was presented to Sodek, an academic and student-athlete standout who plans to attend TWU in the fall and major in sports management. Sodek also has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Pioneers.

TWU Chancellor Carine Feyten presented the scholarship to Sodek in a surprise announcement during a school assembly at Flatonia High School.

“Summer is a perfect match for Texas Woman’s, as we share a commitment focused on leadership and service,” Feyten said. “She was raised to appreciate that a strong work ethic and tenacity are virtues that will help with career success.”

Among Sodek’s high school accomplishments are:

• Served as president of the National Honor Society, Student Council and the senior class.

• Member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Interact Club.

• Multisport athlete who competed in basketball, volleyball, track and cheerleading, earning athletic honors such as district MVP in basketball and volleyball; TABC All-State in basketball and nominated for the McDonald’s All-American team in basketball.

• Maintained a 4.0 high school GPA and ranked first in her class for the past three years. She will graduate with 27 dual-credit college hours.

The university awards only one Chancellor’s Endowed Scholarship per year, which typically is awarded to a Texas high school graduate with an outstanding record of service, extracurricular activity and academic achievement. Besides receiving the monetary award, Sodek will be mentored personally by Feyten during Sodek’s academic journey at TWU.
