Haylie Goode Playing Up to Her Name for Tourney Champ Schulenburg Softball
Schulenburg softball player Haylie Goode put on a hitting clinic in a recent tournament at Somerville, resulting in a championship title.
During Goode’s remarkable stretch, she posted a batting average of .643 during a five game span.
“She just plays. She doesn’t let anything bother or get to her,” said Schulenburg head softball coach Gilbert Price. “She just plays the game like it’s supposed to be played. She’s always positive and stuff. She’s just a good kid. She does a good job at shortstop and in the batter’s box. She’s just trying to keep everybody up. She’s a good leader and she’s a good player.”
Goode’s smashing performance has given her the nod for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.
Question: What’s your mindset like when you step up to the plate?
Answer: “Really, I just try not to over-think it too much because any pitcher you face, they can have a number of pitches. There could be a change up, outside, rise ball, and those are kind of the ones I struggle with. So I’m just thinking the first one I see, I can swing at. That usually helps me a lot.”
Question: Who’s a softball player you look up to?
Answer: “I’d say Haley Cruse. She plays for Washington. I’ve seen a lot of her stuff. She’s pretty good.”
Question: What do you like the most about softball?
Answer: “I’d say the team effort of it because it’s not just one person. So it’s like, one thing you do doesn’t change the whole game. It’s a number of people added together.”
Question: Who’s a teammate you play catch with the most?
Answer: “That’d be Rilee Sanchez. She’s our centerfielder.”
Question: If you could go to one major league stadium for a baseball game, what would it be and why?
Answer: “I guess just Minute Maid for the Astros because it’s the closest one and it’s easy to get to.”
Question: What’s your favorite sports drink?
Answer: “Just a cool blue Gatorade.”
Question: What are your plans for this summer?
Answer: “Just vacation with my family, stay at home, nothing too big.”
Question: Where’s the best place you’ve been for vacation and why is it the best?
Answer: “My extended family, we typically go to Port Royal in Port Aransas, which is pretty fun. Everybody gets to go.”
Question: Who’s a person you enjoy hanging out with the most?
Answer: “That’d be my catching partner, Rilee Sanchez. She’s my best friend.”
Question: What was your best experience at Schulenburg?
Answer: “I guess the state tournament for volleyball so far.”
With Goode’s strong bat and ability in the field, it will make Schulenburg a tough team to beat throughout the season.
