Grant’s Leadership Has Lady Leps Rolling

La Grange senior basketball player Aysia Grant has been consistently atop the stat sheet throughout the season while taking firm hold of the point guard position. Grant recently kept her solid workload going at the Schulenburg tournament where she earned all-tournament selection honors.

“Aysia has really stepped her level of play this season,” said La Grange head girl’s basketball coach Heath Golan. “I think a lot of it has to do with being a senior and feeling the need to lead. I think with her being a four-year varsity player, the game has really slowed down for her and she handles it all in stride.”

Grant is currently averaging double figures in points and rebounds this year.

“She has been a tremendous teammate,” Golan said. “We will need her to continue to do this as we get into the district season.” With Grant rising to the occasion each and every game, she’s earned herself a nomination for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.

Question: What’s it like to be the point guard of the team?

Answer: “It’s a big step from being a post or a guard. From my freshman or sophomore year, I played a different position. But now, I’m in a totally different position this year and it’s just a big step. But it’s nothing I can’t handle.”

Question: Who’s a point guard that reminds you of yourself?

Answer: “Tori (Harold). She’s not a point guard, but she kind of reminds me of myself with her being so young and her playing this position. Probably by the time she gets a junior or a senior, she’ll probably be where I am.”

Question: What’s your favorite Christmas movie?

Answer: “Home Alone 2”

Question: If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Answer: “Pickles”

Question: What’s the best part about being in La Grange?

Answer: “It being small, safe, and the town being really small to where you know a lot of people. There’s not probably one person that I don’t know in La Grange.”

Question: How do you spend your time outside of school and basketball?

Answer: “Resting. Resting bumps and bruises, eating right, and waiting for basketball again to come back.”

Question: If you could own an alligator or a shark, which one would you choose?

Answer: “Alligator”

Question: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Answer: “Coaching somebody. Coaching another basketball team.”

Question: How does it feel to be a senior?

Answer: “It’s kind of sad knowing that I can’t play with these people that I’m making chemistry with this year, or have the relationships with the coaches or the teachers that I have now. That I know I’m going to have to go somewhere else. It’s kind of sad.”

Question: If you had to give somebody advice on playing basketball, what would you tell them?

Answer: “To be coachable, be humble, listen to your coaches.”

Grant wants to be a leader now and in the future, which shows on and off the court for the senior.
