Goehring’s Tourney MVP Performance Makes Him County Athlete of Week
Round Top-Carmine basketball player Kannyn Goehring has great size and athleticism that he not only puts out onto the court, but the baseball diamond as well. As the Cubs took home the crown for the McDade tournament last weekend, Goehring was named tournament MVP.
Goehring also has a brother, Ryker, who’s a former Player of the Week. His dad, Blake, was a long time coach at Round Top-Carmine as well. “Kannyn does everything that I ask of him,” said Round Top-Carmine head basketball coach Brock Marburger. “He’s a good role model for the other athletes to follow. Works hard and this past week at the McDade tournament, all that hard work paid off. He had a really good weekend. Led us to a 3-0 weekend and first place in the McDade tournament, so really proud of him and proud of our team overall.”
Goehring’s MVP performance has made him our choice for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.
Question: What’s your signature move in basketball?
Answer: “I like to drive to the basket a lot and then sometimes there’s some bigger boys down there, so I like to fadeaway a lot. I’d say that’s my signature move.”
Question: Who’s your favorite basketball player and why?
Answer: “If I had to go back a little bit, I’d probably say Larry Bird just because of what he was doing at the time and my grandparents really liked him too, so I always kind of liked him as well.”
Question: How were you able to have such a big tournament at McDade?
Answer: “We’ve had a lot of practice leading up to this tournament. A lot of tough opponents, so we’ve been putting in a lot of work against a lot of tougher people, so it just kind of all translated really well against these teams.”
Question: If you could play basketball in one gym or arena, where would you play and why?
Answer: “I would probably play at Madison Square Garden just because there’s a lot of people. A lot of hype around that place, so I’d like to see what it’s like.”
Question: Who’s your favorite NBA team and why?
Answer: “The Rockets. Big family tradition watching the Rockets and I remember watching them ever since I was little, so I’ve been following them. Getting better slowly but surely.”
Question: If you had the option to play in any basketball sneaker, which one would you choose and why?
Answer: “Probably just because I don’t know too much about it, I’d just say what I got on. I looked into it a little bit, watched a few review videos and stuff like that and they said this is the best, the KD 7’s. It’s what I’ve been wearing and that’s what I’d stick with.”
Question: What are some things on your Christmas list this year?
Answer: “I know I’ve been wanting a power lifting belt.
See Those can get kind of expensive. I know you can kind of deck them out and customize them, so I’ve been looking at one of those. Some “Hey Dude” shoes I’ve been wanting as well.”
Question: What other sports do you play besides basketball and baseball?
Answer: “I did cross country a little bit and then my newest thing I’ve been doing is tennis and golf. That’s been really fun to try to test the waters out with that.”
Question: Who do you have winning the NBA finals and why?
Answer: “Right now, I’d say maybe the Pelicans because they’re on a really hot, hot streak right now and I like Zion (Williamson), so I’ll say them.”
Question: How does Round Top-Carmine standout from other basketball programs?
Answer: “We’re a really small school, so really tight-knit. We know everybody and there’s not many people on our team. We have a strong starting five that usually plays the majority of the game and I say we can compete with any type of team. If you got a big team that’s big, strong, and athletic or you got a skillful team that can just shoot and be athletic like that. I think we can compete with anybody and just adapt to any team we face.”
Goehring will continue to be a valuable asset for the Cubs as long as he’s on the floor.
