Friday Night Previews
Gonzales vs. La Grange
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Gonzales
Records: LG is 3-4 overall and 0-2 in district. Gonzales is 2-5 and 0-2.
Of Note: This is a battle between two teams trying to climb out of the district cellar and get back in playoff contention. Gonzales’ two wins this season have come against Austin Crockett and Jarrell. Offense has not been the problem for the Apaches as they’ve had a balanced offense that’s averaging over 300 yards a game, led by junior QB Jarren Johnson, who has thrown for 857 yards so far this season. La Grange is averaging 244 yards per game on the ground, led by Bravion Rogers’ 675 yards. Senior quarterback Clay Wolff is throwing the ball better than he has all season, and has now passed for 559 yards this season, Justin Lewis leads the team in tackles with 90.
Last meeting: La Grange beat Gonzales last season 49-25 for their only district victory. The Leps used a 28 point second quarter to put this one away early. Clay Wolff threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns.
Up Next: La Grange hosts Giddings next week.
This week’s games:
La Grange at Gonzales
Cuero at Navasota
Smithville at Giddings
Schulenburg vs. Ganado
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Schulenburg
Records: Schulenburg is 4-4 overall and 1-1 in district. Ganado is 3-4 and 1-0.
Of Note: The Shorthorns saved their best game of the season for when they needed it most in last week’s 49-0 win over Weimar that essentially clinched a playoff berth for the Shorthorns. Now they face the district’s best passing team in the form of the Ganado Indians. Ganado junior quarterback Kyle Bures-Guerrero has already thrown for 1,073 yards this season and he’s also run for a team-high 415 yards ... The 49 points Schulenburg scored last week was more than they had scored in the previous six games combined. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Ryba was particularly explosive against Weimar
Last meeting: Ganado defeated Schulenburg 28-21 last season as the Indians scored 21 fourth quarter points. The game was tied late in the game before the Ganado QB Kyle Bures-Guerrero scored a go-ahead rushing touchdown (his third of the night) with just 2:09 left in the game. Up next: Schulenburg is off next week and then plays at No. 1-ranked Shiner Nov. 5 in the regular season finale.
This week’s games:
Weimar at Shiner
Ganado at Schulenburg
