Cuero vs. La Grange

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: La Grange

Records: LG is 3-2, Cuero is 4-1.

Of Note: The games that really count start Friday and the Leps face a tall test in their district opener against a Cuero team ranked No. 9-ranked in the state. The Gobblers have only one blemish on their record this season, a 29-27 loss to Navarro three weeks ago. Besides that the Gobblers have dominated La Vernia, Wimberley, Yoakum and Somerset, allowing just 25 total points in those four wins. Cuero beat La Vernia 62-7 while La Grange lost to that same La Vernia team 28-20. Cuero quarterback Jerry Rossett has already thrown for 831 yards and nine touchdowns this season. The Gobblers running game is led by junior Tycen Williams, who has run for 587 yards (a 10.1 yards per carry average). La Grange, meanwhile, has been led by do-it-all junior Bravion Rogers, who had five touchdowns in a 56-43 victory over Lago Vista two weeks ago. Rogers has run for 661 yards this season with eight rushing touchdowns. La Grange had four different guys split time at quarterback in the Lago Vista game.

Last meeting: Cuero defeated La Grange 38-27 last season despite 184 rushing yards and three touchdowns by D.J. Taylor. The Leps had both of their top two starting quarterback injured in the first half and also lost three turnovers. Jerry Rossett threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns for the Gobblers.

Up Next: La Grange hosts Navasota next week.

Flatonia at Schulenburg

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Schulenburg

Records: Flatonia is 2-2. Schulenburg is 3-3.

Of Note: An early lead in the district standings is at stake as these incounty rivals play one another in the District 13-2A opener. Flatonia has had plenty of time to prepare for this game, playing for the first time in three weeks. Schulenburg, meanwhile, was in action last Friday and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 21-6 victory over Luling. The Shorthorns defense has been superb this season but lots of questions remain offensively. Flatonia won their first two games of the season, but then lost two in a row to state-ranked foes, Mart and Falls City by a combined 67-0.

Last meeting: Schulenburg defeated Flatonia 21-18 last season as the Shorthorns recovered a late fumble as the Bulldogs were driving for a potential go-ahead score. The Shorthorns got touchdown runs from Jeremiah Houston, Keisean Johnson and Brett Janecek. Flatonia got three touchdown runs from Chris Johnston but they failed on all three extra point tries. Schulenburg’s Isaias Lara was perfect on his three PAT kicks.

Up next: Schulenburg plays at Weimar next week. Flatonia hosts Shiner.
