LaGrangeatLagoVista

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Lago Vista Records: LG is 1-2. Lago Vista is 2-1.

Of Note: Fresh off their first win of the season the Leps make the long trip to Lago Vista to try to keep the momentum going, but it will be tough against a Vikings team that is new to 4A, but was a state semifinalist last year in 3A. The Vikings return five offensive and eight defensive starters from that team led by quarterback Bowen Stobb, who threw for 1,881 yards last season and ran for 1,090. His top target is WR Ethan Helton, who had 14 touchdown catches a year ago. So far this season, Lago Vista started the year with a 71-35 loss to Cameron Yoe, but has since beat Little River Academy 43-29 and Giddings 41-10 last week. Against the Buffaloes six different Vikings scored touchdowns. Meanwhile, La Grange forced five turnovers last week to beat La Vernia 37-27 as Bravion Rogers had two touchdown catches and one rushing TD. Oliver Gunn and Jaxon Cooper also had touchdown catches for the Leps.

Sophomore quarterback Bear Meng threw for three touchdowns in his varsity debut.

Last meeting: Last season La Grange defeated Lago Vista 56-43 as Bravion Rogers ran for three touchdowns and caught a pair of touchdown passes from Clay Wolff.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Poth Records: Schulenburg is 0-3.

Poth is 2-1.

Of Note: The Shorthorns rose to the challenge last week against No. 3 Burton and nearly knocked off the Panthers, but the challenge might be even greater this week as Schulenburg goes to Poth to play a Pirates team that started the season with a 21-14 win over Blanco, bashed Falls City 41-0 and then lost to defending state champ Shiner by just one point last week 22-21.

Poth rushed for 248 yards in that game led by 145 from Matthew Bunn .... Schulenburg’s offense continues to thrive, scoring 41 last week, but the defense continues to be a cause for concern, as the Shorthorns allowed more than 41 points for the third consecutive week. Kenny Schramek had a monster game Friday with five catches for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Shorthorn quarterback Tyler Ryba ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 179 yards (and those three TDs to Schramek).

This is Schulenburg’s final non-district game before play in the seven-team District 13-2A begins next week for them at Hearne.

Last meeting: The Shorthorns lost to the Pirates in the second round of the playoffs in 2013.

Flatonia vs. Falls City

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Flatonia Records: Flatonia is 2-1 and Falls City is 1-2.

Of Note: Flatonia has started the season with a pair of dominant shutout wins (by scores of 35-0 and 34-0) over St. Paul and Nixon-Smiley sandwiched around a 35-14 loss to now-state-ranked 3A Hallettsville. Senior QB Fidel Venegas leads the Bulldogs in passing and rushing and threw for 238 yards last week. In last year’s matchup, Flatonia only managed 23 yards rushing against the Beavers, who would march all the way to the state title game before falling to Stratford 39-27. But every single skill position player from that state runner-up team graduated and only two starters on each side of the ball return for the Beavers (a pair of all-state linemen) and the early going of 2022 has been tough as Falls City lost their season opener 34-0 to Three Rivers and the fell 41-0 to Poth before finally getting their first win of the season last week 32-20 over Stockdale.

Last Meeting: Last season Falls City beat Flatonia 31-0.
