Friday Football Previews
Lago Vista vs. La Grange
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: La Grange
Records: LG is 2-2, Lago Vista is 2-1.
Of Note: It’s homecoming week in La Grange and the Leps welcome the Lago Vista Vikings, a team that went to the fourth round of the playoffs last year in Class 3A. So far this season the Vikings have really been able to score points, beating Cameron 64-62 in the season opener, then Teague 28-0 before losing to Little River Academy 30-28 last week. Viking quarterback Bowen Stobb was a much better runner than passer last week as he ran for 87 yards and two touchdowns last week, but only completed 7 of 16 passes for 51 yards with two interceptions a week ago. Two of the Lago Vista turnovers turned into touchdowns for Little River. But Stobb did throw for 316 yards in the season opener against Cameron... The Leps are coming off a 37-21 victory over Lockhart in the game that La Grange really controlled throughout. The Leps ran for 445 yards led by 154 from Bravion Rogers. He leads the team with 506 yards rushing and five touchdowns. Justin Lewis leads the team with 55 tackles, followed by Andrew Faske with 53.
Last meeting: Last season the Leps went to Lago Vista and beat the Vikings 42-26 as D.J. Taylor ran for 262 yards and four touchdowns. Bravion Rogers threw a touchdown pass and caught a touchdown pass in that game.
Up Next: La Grange is off next week before opening district play at home against Cuero Oct. 8.
Flatonia at Tidehaven
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Tidehaven HS
Records: Flatonia is 2-2. Tidehaven is 2-2.
Of Note: This is a battle between two teams looking to bounce back from lopsided losses against very good teams. Tidehaven lost 45-10 last week to No. 5-ranked 3A team Industrial. Flatonia, meanwhile, lost to No. 7-ranked 2A Falls City 36-0. That loss for the Bulldogs came on the heels of a 31-0 loss to No. 1-ranked Mart. Now Flatonia faces these 3A Tigers, which own a 42-0 win over Weimar already this season. In a stark contrast to past seasons, Flatonia has done the most damage this season through the air, with 591 yards passing compared to just 228 yards rushing. Junior Dayton Cliffe leads the Bulldogs in tackles with 40 and Reese Ramirez is right behind with 39.
Last meeting: Flatonia opened the 2016 season with a 22-6 loss to Tidehaven. Corey Lyons ran for 131 yards in that game for the Bulldogs.
Up next: The Bulldogs are off next week before opening district play Oct. 8 at Schulenburg.
Schulenburg at Hallettsville
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Hallettsville
Records: Schulenburg is 2-2. Hallettsville is 3-1.
Of Note: After starting the season with two wins, the Shorthorns are in the midst of a two-game losing streak, and it only gets tougher as Schulenburg heads to Hallettsville, which was a state runnerup last season in Class 3A. No. 4-ranked Hallettsville started the season with a 21-6 loss to Shiner (no shame in that) and has since won three games in a row, 28-24 over Industrial, 45-7 over Ganado and 54-3 over Rice ... Schulenburg has looked really stout defensively but had struggled to score points, averaging just eight points per game over their last three contests ... Sophomore quarterback Tyler Ryba scored the only touchdown for Schulenburg in last week’s 17-6 loss to East Bernard.
Last meeting: You’ve got to go back to 2009 to find the last time these two teams played, a 40-29 Hallettsville win despite 288 passing yards from Shorthorn Kyle Bludau.
Up Next: The Shorthorns play at Luling next week.
