Friday Football Previews
La Grange vs. Lockhart
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Lockhart
Records: LG is 1-2, Lockhart is 1-2.
Of Note: This is a battle of two teams looking to snap two-game losing streaks. After going winless last season, 5A Lockhart started this season with a 33-29 win over Victoria West, but the last two weeks have been a struggle for the Lions as they lost to Buda Johnson 56-8 and then last week to Dripping Springs 49-15. Defense has been the issue, but Lockhart has had some impressive offensive stars. Running back Sean McKinney is averaging 100 yards per game on the ground (and as a team the Lions have rushed for 219 yards per contest). Sophomore quarterback Ashton Dickens is 6-foot-2 and has thrown for 118 yards per game ... La Grange, meanwhile, has been its own worst enemy with turnovers (six last week alone) and penalties (18 last week alone) undoing so much of the good the Leps have done. Bravion Rogers has continued to be an explosive playmaker (he’s averaging 185 all-purpose yards per game) and last week Clay Wolff and Dana Baker both had long touchdown runs in a 28-20 loss to La Vernia. La Grange’s Andrew Faske leads the team in tackles with 39 and Justin Lewis is second with 37. The Leps are averaging 250 yards per game on the ground and 90 through the air.
Last meeting: Though these teams have scrimmaged in recent years, you have to go all the way back to 2011 to find the last time they played each other in a real game, with Lockhart winning that season 34-9.
Up Next: La Grange hosts Lago Vista for homecoming next week..
Flatonia vs. Falls City
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Falls City
Records: Flatonia is 2-1. Falls City is 2-1 .
Of Note: These two teams have engaged in some epic battles in recent years as former district rivals and in the playoffs, but now they tangle in a non-district game, Flatonia’s first road game of the season. Falls City has beaten Three Rivers 27-12 and Stockdale 34-12 sandwiched around a 17-14 loss to Poth. The Beavers have a stable of strong running backs, and four different guys have run for over 100 yards this season and they are averaging six yards per carry as a unit .... Flatonia meanwhile started the season with a 61-0 win over Runge and then a 28-26 win over Stockdale before falling 31-0 last week against No-1 ranked Mart. Flatonia quarterback Fidel Venegas has thrown for 429 yards per game.
Last meeting: Flatonia played Falls City last year, winning 34-7 with Keyshaun Green throwing two TDs and running for one more.
Up next: The Bulldogs play at Tiddehaven next week.
Schulenburg vs. E. Bernard
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Schulenburg
Records: Schulenburg is 2-1. East Bernard is 2-1.
Of Note: After starting the season with two wins, the Shorthorns lost to defending private school state champ Shiner St. Paul 34-7 last week. The lack of offense is beginning to be a concern for Schulenburg, which just scored 12 points the week before in a win over Randolph ... East Bernard started the season with a 24-7 loss to Edna but has since had a 32-29 win over Hitchcock and a 49-14 win over Boling last week ... Former La Grange student Caleb Magness (son of a pair of former LHS coaches) leads the Brahmas in receiving with 11 catches for 223 yards. East Bernard senior quarterback Dallas Novicke has been really sharp, completing 60-percent of his passes for 398 yards this season so far.
Last meeting: Back in 2019 these teams played as district rivals with East Bernard winning 42-14.
Up Next: The Shorthorns play at Hallettsville next week.
