Friday Football Previews
La Grange vs. La Vernia
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: La Vernia
Records: LG is 1-1, La Vernia is 0-2.
Of Note: From Canyon Lake’s Slot-T to La Vernia’s spread, the Leps face a very different offensive attack this week. La Vernia has had real trouble scoring points this season, losing their season-opener to Cuero 62-7 and then falling to Navarro 35-6 last week. La Vernia went 7-4 last season and lost in the first round of the playoffs to Canyon Lake ... La Grange meanwhile is going to try to bounce back from last week’s 31-14 loss to Canyon Lake. La Grange’s has had trouble turning over the football, with three turnovers in their opener and three more last week. Bravion Rogers scored both of the Leps touchdowns last week. Justin Lewis leads the Leps in tackles with 31.
Last meeting: In what was probably the highlight of last season for the Leps, La Grange rallied from a 28-10 deficit to score 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win 32-28.
Up Next: La Grange plays at Lockhart next week.
Flatonia vs. Mart
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Flatonia
Records: Flatonia is 2-0. Mart is 2-0 .
Of Note: The Flatonia Bulldogs are undefeated but a huge challenge looms if they want to stay that way as defending state runner-up Mart comes to town. And the Panthers again look like state title contenders beating Teague 48-0 in the season opener and then McGregor 42-7 last week. Mart senior quarterback Kei’shawn Clater has thrown for 215 yards already this season and the Panthers have also run for 282 yards per game this season. But Flatonia counters with a good quarterback of its own in Fidel Venegas, who has thrown for 294 yards and three touchdowns this season and he also ran for three touchdowns last week in a two-point win over Stockdale. Reese Ramirez leads the Bulldogs in tackles this season.
Up next: Next week the Bulldogs play at Falls City.
Schulenburg vs. St. Paul
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Schulenburg
Records: Schulenburg is 2-0. St. Paul is 1-1.
Of Note: It’s homecoming week in Schulenburg and a big challenge looms to the Shorthorns undefeated record in the form of Shiner St. Paul, which had an impressive 59-36 victory over Yorktown in the season opener. Then the Cardinals fell 40-20 last week to Cypress Christian ... The Shorthorns, meanwhile beat Randolph 12-0 last week and Stockdale 35-23 in the season opener. Kenny King has made some big-time offensive plays in both games and Desmond Lewis had been the leader of the running game both weeks for the Shorthorns ... These two teams have not faced each other in the past couple of decades.
Up Next: Next week the Shorthorns host East Bernard.
