Flatonia Prevails in Overtime Playoff Thriller Over Johnson City
In a game Flatonia football fans will remember for a long time, the Bulldogs prevailed over Johnson City, and their old coach, 27-19 in overtime Friday in San Antonio in the first round of the 2A playoffs.
This is the seventh consecutive season Flatonia has advances to at least the second round of the playoffs.
Flatonia took a 17-0 lead in this game only to have Johnson City make a furious second half comeback to tie the game.
But in overtime the Bulldogs won it on a two-yard touchdown run by Fidel Venegas, while the Flatonia defense held Johnson City scoreless in OT.
Venegas had a monster game for Flatonia, throwing for 122 yards and running for 156 and three touchdowns.
Also key for Flatonia was Keyshaun Green, who had an interception and also returned a blocked point after kick for two points in the third quarter.
Johnson City (8-3) was coached by former Flatonia head coach David Sine. Current Flatonia head coach Chris Freytag had been an assistant under Sine, who last coached at Flatonia in 2008.
Flatonia (5-4) now advances to play the state’s No. 1-ranked team, Refugio (11-0). That game will be 6:30 p.m. Friday at Floresville’s Eschenberg Field.
