Here’s a sneak preview of the cover of our 32-page football preview magazine, which will be included free in next Tuesday’s newspaper.

High School football Friday nights are almost here.

The regular seasons start Friday Aug. 28, and there’s so much to be excited about for all three Fayette County teams.

• La Grange has one of its most experienced returning teams in recent memory.

• Schulenburg is not only moving up to 3A, but is expected to really make some noise in their new district.

• Flatonia had a four-win improvement last season.

We tried to capture some of that excitement on the cover of our 32-page football preview section, which is included free in this coming Tuesday’s newspaper.

We’re honoring the six cover guys as this week’s Fayette County Athletes of the Week.

The La Grange trio we photographed represent different aspects of the Leps’ strengths.

Eli Gillum is a returning senior quarterback who ran and threw for well over 1,000 yards last year.

“He’s such a dynamic player,” La Grange head coach Kyle Cooper said of Gillum. “We’re really excited about the growth he’s made through the offseason and will continue to make through season.”

Jahir Lopez Ocon, the team’s center, represents the strong, senior-laden offensive and defensive fronts that will be a strength of this year’s team. Ocon is also one of the top-ranked students in this senior class.

Trey Broussard, a junior, is a really explosive wide receiver, defensive back and return man for the Leps.

The Schulenburg representative on the cover is quarterback Owen Brenek who is a returning first team-all district player for the Shorthorns. He threw for over 1,500 yards in the regular season last year.

The two Flatonia guys on our cover are seniors Eli Kubesch and Kevin Ramirez, who were described like this by head coach Matt Uzzell: “They’re some of the best kids I’ve coached in the 25 years that I’ve done this,” Uzzell said. “They’re incredibly hardworking, both of them. Worked over full-time jobs this summer and then still found a way to come to the weight room and to do things to get better. They passionately want to see this program succeed.

“It’s hard to teach an 18-year-old kid how to lead his peers, but I think they’re learning how to do that.”

We hope you enjoy the magazine as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

And then we hope you get out to a stadium soon to cheer on these great student athletes.
