Eleanor Carey
La Grange cross country runner Eleanor Carey is only a freshman and is already making a name for herself on the stat sheets. In the Schulenburg meet last Thursday, Carey finished fourth out of 122 runners in her race. “Eleanor established high standards as a middle school runner and has taken it to another level,” said La Grange head cross country coach Chris Westall. “She is off to a phenomenal start to her high school running career. It all starts with her work ethic and desire to compete, which usually sees her finishing at or near the top in every race. I’m excited to see her progression throughout the season and beyond. Her potential is unlimited.” Carey’s early dominance has made her our selection for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.
Question: What was going through your mind when you were ahead of the pack at the Schulenburg meet?
Answer: “I mainly just didn’t want to get passed because it was a hard race. There’s a lot of people, so I just wanted to keep my position.”
Question:Where’s your favorite place to run?
Answer: “My favorite course that we practice on is White Rock Park and then my favorite meet that I’ve been to is Shiner.”
Question: Being a freshman, what are you looking forward to the most about high school?
Answer: “All the extra curriculars and clubs. I want to try to do as much as I can.”
Question: When did you decide you wanted to become a runner?
Answer: “My parents kind of wanted me to start running to just try to get in shape more, then I realized well maybe I’ll just do cross country. I really liked participating in all the meets.”
Question: Do you play any other sports?
Answer: “I do track, tennis, swim, and cheer.”
Question: What’s your dream job?
Answer: “Right now, I don’t exactly know, but probably being a vet.”
Question: Who’s someone that can always make you laugh?
Answer: “My mom always makes me laugh with her stories.”
Question: What stands out to you about what you’ve experienced thus far in high school?
Answer: “Just all the work. You have to keep up with your school work and then all the different extra curriculars and clubs. It’s a lot to manage, but it’s fun.”
Question: What’s the best word of advice you’ve received?
Answer: “Maybe just to keep going.”
Question: Where do you see yourself going in your cross country career?
Answer: “I don’t think I’m that good, but I hope to make it to regionals this year and try to have a good race there. Then hopefully state.” La Grange cross country is in good hands now and in the future as long as Carey is on the roster.
