Baseball Playoffs: Leps Fall, But RTC,
The La Grange baseball team saw its season come to an end in an Area Round playoff sweep at the hands of Salado (25-9) last week.
The Leps lost 15-1 in Game 1 and 9-3 in Game 2.
La Grange ends its season with a 16-13 overall record, but only graduate one senior, Oliver Gunn. In Thursday’s Game 1 loss, Dalton Janacek and Eli Gillum doubled for the Leps. Gillum scored the only run for La Grange. In Friday’s loss, Howard Holmes had two hits for the Leps and Gillum drove in two runs.
Lions Win 2-0
The defending state champ Fayetteville baseball team passed a big hurdle in their title defense as they beat D’Hanis 2-0 Thursday in Kenedy in a one game Area Round series. Jack Schley pitched 6.2 innings of shutout ball, striking out 16. Dylan Henneke got the final out for the save. Schley and Henneke scored both runs. Kandon Kaspar singled and drove in a run. The Lions improve to 8-5. D’Hanis ended their season with a 12-3 record. Fayetteville now advances to face Knippa (7-11) in a best of three series at Long Creek. Game 1 is Thursday at 5 p.m. Game 2 will follow Game 1. If needed a Game 3 would be Friday at 7 p.m.
RTC Beats Menard
The Round Top-Carmine baseball team won the Area title and advanced to the third round of the playoffs with a 5-0 win over Menard Friday.
Will Neese pitched a complete game one-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Cubs. Cody Wunderlich had two hits and Kash Wessels doubled. RTC (8-8) now advances to face Medina (12-7). Game 1 is Thursday at 6 p.m. at Blanco High School. Game 2 is Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Austin Vandergrift High School. If necessary, Game 3 would start 30 minutes after Game 2.
Shorthorns Sweep
The Schulenburg baseball team improved to 26-5 and won a 2A Area Round title by sweeping Charlotte 5-1 and 13-3 last week.
In the 5-1 win, Ian Reeves pitched a complete game fourhitter with 11 strikeouts. Reid Janda doubled and tripled. Van Prihoda had three hits and Owen Brenek had two hits and two RBIs.
In the 13-3 win, Brenek pitched five innings, before Nick Goode pitched a perfect sixth. Jayse Janda, Brenek, Emerson Harvey, Prihoda, Landon Conner and Eli Blansitt all had two hits in that game. The Shorthorns now advance to play Thorndale in a best-of-three series Wednesday, Friday, and if needed Saturday, all at 7 p.m. in Elgin.
