Speed Family Reunion Held in Muldoon

The 76th annual Speed Family Reunion was held on the second Saturday in June with 29 family members in attendance.

It was a great day with lots of visiting and eating going on at the Muldoon Mercantile, along with a bunch of fun door prizes. Coming from the longest distance was Jimmy Speed and Tim Taylor from Florida, traveling 1,121 miles. The youngest Speed descendant was Ira James Ivy, who was three. The oldest was Harrell Rightmer at 93 years old.

The next reunion will be on June 13, 2026 once again at the Muldoon Mercantile.

No July 4 Celebraiton

There will be no 4th of July celebration in Muldoon this year. When the call went out for help organizing the event there was a lack of response, so the event was canceled. The 4th of July parade, picnic and auction has been going for a number of years and was originally organized by Muldoon native, Billie Jean Rightmer. This will make for a quiet weekend in the Muldoon area.

Howard Passes

Will Howard, Jennifer Rightmer’s father, passed away on June 7, 2025 after a short illness. He was 88 years old. A memorial service will be held on July 19 at The Church at Horseshoe Bay at 11 a.m.

He is survived by wife Marilyn; children Jennifer Rightmer and husband Clay; Wade Howard and wife Karen; Julie Zavala; and Jeff Howard; as well as his grandchildren Lane Rightmer; Reed Rightmer; Kaylin Zavala; Zack Zavala; and Georgia Howard; along with four stepdaughters, eight step grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.

Out and About

Devon Boehnke enjoyed a wonderful Father’s Day weekend beginning with a Saturday lunch at Sealand in La Grange with a big part of his family. In the group were: Dana and Darrell Kulak, Jeremy, Angela, Dylan and Brianna Wells from the Austin area; Beth and Jack Field of the Magnolia area; April and Kenneth Pospisil of Wharton; along with Joy and Jimmy Fackler; Jenny Zuhn and her daughters Charlotte and Delilah. Following lunch everyone retired to the ranch to go pet some cows.

James Ivy and I enjoyed having our grandson, Ira James Ivy come out fromAustin to enjoy the Speed family reunion and to spend some time out in the country. He got Uncle Bobby Ivy to play with him and to just enjoy seeing the cows.

Illness

There are still some in the community that are ill. A tummy bug and all kinds of allergies are making the rounds. Be sure and check in on your neighbors to make sure that they are doing ok.

Road Hazards

The sides of the FM roads in the area have recently been mowed, making seeing animals in the ditch easier, but hogs are back in the area and deer have been very active recently. Watch out while you are driving for the wildlife. A number of animals have been hit and this can do lots of damage to vehicles. Then after the animal is hit the scavengers move in and are also a road hazard.
