Senior Connections Offers Full Week of Fun, Learning and Friendship

Senior Connections is the perfect remedy for boredom and loneliness for people aged 55 and up. Membership is free, and yes, the food is fine, and the friendship cannot be beat. We have three locations: our central hub in Schulenburg; satellites in Weimar and Flatonia; and one in La Grange, coming soon.

We have an important announcement for members who join in Schulenburg. Many of you have observed that the City of Schulenburg has been repairing plumbing lines and the parking lot. It will be resurfaced via an outside contractor during the week of the July 13. We are not exactly sure when this will be, so keep an eye out for announcements of potential closures or relocations of programs while the contractors do their work.

If we do relocate, it will be to the newly remodeled Schulenburg Civic Center on Hillje Ave. which is just through the park from the center.

Here is the agenda for the week of July 13-17.

On Monday, July 13, join us at 1111 Bohlmann Ave. in Wolters Park in Schulenburg. Schedule is the same at all three locations, where we are open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mornings are filled with domino games, puzzle assembly, card games, coffee, and camaraderie. Lunch will be chili and cornbread, a fresh garden salad, and dessert, brought by Carolyn Moore. This day is also Cookie Round Up day, so over the weekend, if you decide to bake some cookies, consider baking a few extra dozen for us and dropping them off so we can bag them up for our wonderful bingo callers and speakers who join us.

The Lunch and Learn program for the day includes Gary and Carol Bucek from the Polka Museum in La Grange who will share information about the fabulous place. Senior Connections will be visiting the Polka Museum next month for our adventure, so if you’re interested in joining, make sure to get your name on the sign-up sheet. You can call the center to do that. After the program, La Brittany with True Care Living of Columbus will come to call the bingo game.

On Tuesday, July 14, join us at Flatonia Methodist Church at 403 E. North Main St. Today is blood pressure check day, so if you’re interested in getting yours taken professionally from a nurse from Flatonia Healthcare, they will be there from 10-11 a.m. Tamale pie with rice and beans is on the menu for the day and Mary Kalinec will be bringing the desserts. For the educational program today, the Wellsential team will join with Chyla, Keeley, and Melissa. Their program, Step into Wellness with Wellsential, will show members how simple it is to move our bodies to improve our health. Haley with Crown Hospice will call our bingo game.

On Wednesday, July 15, Senior Connections is back in Schulenburg. You will want to get there early today. Wednesdays are always the busiest days, so we start food service a little earlier. Get there by 11 a.m. to get a seat and a cool beverage. Barbecue brisket and sausage with broccoli salad from Oakridge Smokehouse is sure to pack the house along with baked beans, bread, and desserts made by members. Today is also the day we celebrate July birthdays, so if you have a birthday this month and would like to get your picture with the birthday cake, be there by 10:45 a.m. We go straight into bingo after lunch, and you’ll be glad to hear that Jeffrey from Columbus Healthcare Community will call the game.

Artful Friday continues on Friday, July 17 at Senior Connections in Schulenburg. We continue the watercolor and painting-with-wool/needle- felting classes with Claire Lewis and Bonnie Karstedt, then indulge in a meal afterward. Classes are from 1012 a.m., and after we eat, we will continue with open studio time until 2:30 p.m. so that participants can finish projects for the upcoming Ageless Artistry Showcase on Sept. 12, with an opening reception. The art show will take place in Jack Gallery. It will hang until the end of November.
