Thirteen members of the La Grange Senior Association ventured to Shiner last month for lunch and a tour of the Spoetzel Brewery. On May 21, the group left from the Randolph Recreation Center in La Grange mid morning. Upon arrival at the brewery, they enjoyed a barbecue lunch and began their tour at 1 p.m. Attendee Dana Sternadel shared some photos and interesting information learned from the tour. Shiner Bock was first brewed as a seasonal beer. It didn’t take long for its popularity to make it a year round offering, and it now accounts for 75% of their sales.

The brewery uses the same equipment to fill cans and bottles. Depending on the day you visit, you will see one or the other but not both. The Shiner Bock creature shown in the photo was made from over 2,000 beer bottles. The group saw jars of hops needed for beer making and learned about the different ingredients used in dark and light beers.

It was attendee Linda Urban’s first time to visit the brewery. She said it was fun and the freebies were great.
