Jean Stoelke Sladek, 78, of Fayetteville was received in the arms of our Heavenly Father on Jan. 15, 2021.

Jean was born in Bellville on Feb. 17, 1942, the daughter of Charlie and Olga (Herr) Stoelke. She married Joseph Sladek on Nov. 19, 1961 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fayetteville.

They were blessed with four beautiful children. Jean and Joe owned Fayetteville Propane and loved living in the great little small town of Fayetteville. Jean always dressed for success and sold Sarah Coventry jewelry on the side to accessorize her wardrobe, but the career she was most passionate about was being a stay at home mom which allowed for her to make memories traveling with her children and be involved in their day to day school activities and community events. Friends of her four children always went to “Mama Jean’s” house. It was the main hangout and Mama Jean decided to transform her dining room into the community’s teenage pool hall for a few years!

Jean moved to Corpus Christi in the 90s with her loving companion, Mr. Bill. There, she was owner of an antique store, the Country Peddler. She hosted estate sales and always managed to find junk to turn into treasure for sale at her shop. After the death of Mr. Bill, Jean moved back to her hometown of Fayetteville and immediately fell back into her identity in the community… but this time she was known to everyone as “Granny!”

She enjoyed going out on the town to hang out with friends and drink a cold Miller Lite (or two)! Granny was always joyful and had a vigorous love for life. She treasured her time with family and was proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and she loved every person that touched her life like family. She expressed her love for others by working part-time at Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home. She cherished dancing, loved playing games, trying her luck at the slot machines, and caring for her furry friends. She even took up dogsitting as a job in her later years.

Jean was proud to be a Fayetteville Lion and continued her support of the school and the students throughout her lifetime. She was a loyal fan and could be found sitting in the stands at almost all sporting events and games. If someone was yelling in the stands, especially to the refs, you just knew it had to be Granny!

She said what was on her mind but had the most kind and compassionate heart. Jean built great family traditions that will be cherished in our hearts such as memorable vacations to New Braunfels, annual attendance at the San Antonio Rodeo, beach adventures in Port Aransas, and creative celebrations like Camo Christmas. Family was very important to Jean and we all have tons of memories of Granny in our hearts. She taught us the importance of being surrounded by family and friends, loving at all times, and having pure plain fun in every moment!

While we are saddened by our loss, we are thankful for our many blessings and Grannymoments and are content with the incredible legacy she left for us all. We know she has been reunited with the family and friends that have gone before us and they are now enjoying their moments with her just as we did!

She is survived by two daughters: Wanda Fritsch and husband, Ted, of Fayetteville; Janet Sladek-Grayson and husband, Cary of La Grange; son, Rodney Wayne Sladek of Fayetteville; daughter-in-law, Lori Lange Sladek of Brenham; five grandchildren: Brooke Wood and husband, Eric; Bailey Kulhanek and husband, Chad; Riley and Gavin Grayson; Shea Sladek; five great grandchildren: Breck, Crew, and Kage Wood; Creed and Cross Kulhanek; two sisters-in-law: Dorine Stoelke, Alice Stoelke; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Olga Stoelke; her husband, Joe D. Sladek; her oldest son, Mark Joseph; her companion, Bill Barrett; her two brothers Delphine and Delton Stoelke; two neices, Sheryl Main and Donna Kaltwasser.
