Barbara Joan Dean (Stirrup) Rogers, 101, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 24, 2022, at Oak Manor in Flatonia.

Barbara was born in Winsford, Cheshire, England, Sept. 8, 1920, the daughter of Walter and Elizabeth “Bettie” (Dean) Stirrup.

As the daughter of a school headmaster, Barbara enjoyed a youth full of learning and adventure. After graduation from the University of Leeds, she taught English and was the field hockey coach of a girl’s school. World War II brought a tall, handsome, blue-eyed Texan to the town of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, where Barbara was teaching. Charles Rogers openly lived his Christian faith and challenged Barbara to read a chapter in the Bible each day, the same he would be reading. She invited Christ into her life as Savior and Lord and lived her faith. Charles and Barbara were married June 15, 1945; and soon made their home in Houston, where Barbara taught school. After moving to Muldoon in 1970, she taught school in Flatonia.

Charles and Barbara were active in Muldoon Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, La Grange and Flatonia Baptist Church. They shared Christ’s work in their lives on Lay-Renewal Mission trips organized by Don Gibson of the Texas Baptist Men’s department of the Texas Baptist Convention, making many trips throughout the United States and traveling as far as Alaska and Australia. Barbara loved their farm in Muldoon where she enjoyed gardening vegetables and flowers, watching the deer and birds, writing for magazines and newspapers, teaching Sunday School and leading Bible studies. One of her students, Horace Beck once remarked: “She is the best Bible teacher ever, and I’ve had many!”

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Don Kirby of Muldoon, her son James Rogers of Evergreen, Colorado; ten grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1983, and her son and daughter-in-law John and Sandy (Moore) Rogers of Houston, in 1985.

A memorial service will be held at Muldoon Baptist Church, Sunday, March 13, at 3 pm.
