Shirley y (Jones) Pyburn, 87, of La Grange, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Oct 31, 2020.

Shirley was born in Temple on Nov. 15, 1932, the daughter of the late Charles Emory Jones and Ruby Fern (Smith) Jones. She graduated from Angleton High School and attended Southern Methodist University before she married her high school sweetheart, Jack Dies Pyburn, Jr. on Dec. 27, 1950. During their 60 years of marriage they were blessed with four wonderful children, 13 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren.

Shirley started a career as an executive secretary beginning at Texas A&M University while her husband attended college. They then moved to Houston where she worked for Sun-X Glass Tinting. hi 1962 they moved the family to Dallas where she worked at Texas Instruments. In 1972 they moved to La Grange to help with the family ranch. She transferred to continue working at Texas Instruments in Austin. Later she worked for Bluebonnet Electric and the Giddings State School. Locals would remember that Shirley and Jack were the owners and operators of the very successful Pinewood Inn Restaurant in the early 80’s. Following the sale of the restaurant they both worked in the booming oil business of the day. In the late 80’s they finally retired to work even harder on the family cattle ranch.

Shirley had a servant’s heart and was an active community volunteer for many years. She became a loyal member of the First United Methodist Church of La Grange in 1972 where she was enthusiastically active in Sunday School and choir. She volunteered for Second Chance, AMEN and the Methodist Men’s booth at the Round Top Antiques show. During her 33 years of membership she held all offices and received the distinction of Chapter Honorary Regent. She is also a member of The National Society of American Colonists where she currently served as a state officer. Other society memberships included The National Huguenot Society; National Society Descendants of Early Quakers; Descendants of Cape Cod and Surrounding Islands; Southern Dames of America and National Society Daughters of Colonial Wars.

Shirley was a loving mother, grandmother and friend, who was so thoughtful and who never missed a birthday and a chance to tell someone she loved them and cared about them. She was a great listener, always had a smile on her face and made you feel special. In her spare time she loved to travel and in just the past few years, visited far off destinations like France, Panama Canal and Mexico. She also loved dance and music and spent many years as a member of the Road Runner Square Dancing club and playing the dulcimer.
