Patterson
Joseph Howard Patterson Jr. “Bucky” passed away on Sunday, Oct. 3. He bravely battled cancer for many months and took his last breath knowing how much he was loved.
Bucky worked hard, played hard, loved his family, enjoyed his friends and couldn’t imagine life was worth living without a dog by his side. He was born in Houston on June 20, 1951 to Joseph H. and Ruby E. Patterson, where he lived all his life. He owned Patterson Hardware from the mid 70’s until retiring in 2003, where he gave such sound advise as “if it don’t fit, force it; if it breaks, it needed fixin’ any way”.
Bucky is survived by his family. He loved his wife Susan for over 40 years. He was proud of his son Lee, wife Wendy and their two children, Kaya and Zachary. He respected his son Brian, wife Julie and their children, Samantha, Taylor and Mallory, who put a twinkle in his eye. When confused in this modern tech world, Bucky would regularly just say “Let’s call Brian!”
He is also survived by his sister, Gayle Johnston, her children and grandchildren and his brother-in-law, Dave Walford, for whom he always had a special bond; and the many cherished friendships he had for decades.
Bucky was preceded in death by his beloved son, Grant, who was his riding, hunting and fishing buddy. Also by his dear friend, Ron Munson. It is comforting to know they are back together again.
One of Bucky’s favorite things to do in life was watching his family and friends enjoy the things he loved most, whether that was at his place on Caney Creek or at “The Farm” in Fayette County. For Bucky spending time with others, fishing, skiing, jumping off the pier, four wheeling, riding motorcycle or just porch sittin’, watching his loved ones do the same, always ended with him reflecting “I had a good day.”
Bucky had a passion for motorcycles; road racing, motocross, flat track, and he never got tired of telling race stories with his friends (or anybody who would listen). He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and if you knew Bucky well, you know he found pleasure reading Texas history, digging in the dirt, finding a good “bargain” and sharing random facts whenever he got a chance, which we fondly called “Buckyisms”.
Although we wished he was with us longer, Bucky loved his wife, he was proud of his sons, adored his grandchildren and spent his life doing the things he loved. His life was well lived.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Bucky’s Life on Nov. 6 from 2 to 4 in the afternoon, where we would love for you to share your favorite memory or story about Bucky. It will be held at Coon Creek Farm, 5237 Game Warden Rd, Fayetteville, TX 78940. Weather permitting, we will celebrate outside under the tree where Bucky and Susan celebrated their wedding. Dress is casual, and we will serve all Bucky’s favorite desserts.
You can visit Bucky’s Memorial Page www.mykeeper.com/profile/BuckyPatterson/ if you wish to share memories and pictures.
