Vastine “Mack” Gustav Michalk, 94, of La Grange, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022.

Vastine was born in La Grange on Feb. 14, 1927, the son of Oswald and Louise (Schramm) Michalk. He married Elsie Gaertner on Aug. 27, 1977. He served in the U.S. Army/Air Corp during World War II. After returning from the service, Vastine worked as a commercial fisherman. Vastine was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in La Grange.

Vastine is survived by his loving daughter, Lisa Michalk. He is also survived by his loving wife, Elsie Michalk; three step children: Dean Gaertner and wife, Mary Beth; Rebecca Gaertner Byrd and husband, Donnie; Kenneth Gaertner and wife, Glenda; brother, Jesse Michalk and wife, LaVerne; sister, Florence Michalk Hudler; five step grandchildren; 16 step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Walter Michalk and wife, Ethlyn; sister, Ruby Michalk Heintschel and husband, Louis; sister, Beatrice Michalk Kominczak and husband, Joseph; brother-in-law, Tony Hudler.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations. Family received friends from 4 to 6 p.m.

Funeral Services were held at Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022. Burial followed at La Grange City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
