Bernice (Vacek) Kana Holubec, formerly of La Grange, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021 at Wesleyan Skilled Nursing Facility in Georgetown.

She was born on Sept. 24, 1927 in Weimar to Emil and Wilma Mensik Vacek. She attended St. Michael’s Elementary, Weimar High School and Incarnate Word College in San Antonio.

Bernice and Frank Kana were married on Aug. 4, 1951. She was a devoted wife and homemaker during their remarkable 18 years together. She was honored to support him during the two National Championship trips to Omaha with the UT Longhorn baseball team, development of his insurance agency in La Grange, and during his years as Vice President of LG State Bank. His untimely death at the age of 42 left her a widow at 41 with 5 children under the age of 17 to raise. JC Holubec entered her life a year later and after dating for 8 years, they married on Oct. 27, 1978. They had 38 years of marriage together before his death on Nov. 17, 2016.

As a devout Catholic, she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for over 60 years. She served dutifully in the Catholic Daughters of America, Altar Society, and organizing food and hospitality for the Sacred Heart funeral committee. Another cause dear to her heart was the American Cancer Society. She and JC were volunteer drivers of cancer patients to their treatments in Austin for 23 years. Her love of volunteering was evident in her years of volunteering at Second Chance Emporium.

Bernice lived a remarkable 93 years. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, a devout woman of Catholic faith, fun-loving and loved to travel. Her legacy and love of family will live on for generations.

She is survived by her son, Charles Kana (Lisa); daughters: Carol Hernandez (Kenny), Jane Shepherd (Mark), and Mary Black (Jack). She was a devoted, loving “Nanny” to her 9 grandchildren: Keith Hernandez, Amy Lynn (Robert), Kyle Kana (Kacee), Sarah Jackson (Fields), Natalie Poulos (James), Trevor Shepherd, Kevin Shepherd, Evan Templeton (Gil), Ali Black, and eight greatgrandchildren: Will and Andrew Kana, Greer, Liv and Sloane Jackson, Luke and Alex Poulos, and Keating Lynn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Frank, Sr.; JC; her oldest son, Frank Jr.; and her siblings: Judy Renger, Dorothy Rodgers and Gene “Sonny” Vacek.
