A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernard Paul Friedel, Sr, 83, is scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Plum. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in La Grange.

Bernard was born Dec. 4, 1937 to Frank Friedel and Cyrilla (Novosad) Friedel in La Grange. Bernard married Vivian Mascheck on Aug. 24, 1958 at St. John Catholic Church in Fayetteville.

Bernard enjoyed squirrel hunting, woodworking, the outdoors, Polka music, playing his guitar, and he was a classic car enthusiast. He spent about 40 years of his life in the grocery business. He began at Bill Roy’s and then at Super S Foods. He was the youngest store manager in Bill Roy’s history. He loved to interact with the customers and would spend time with them speaking Czech. They would walk to the store and then when done with their shopping Bernard and other store employees would drive them to their homes. He was also involved with the DECA Program at La Grange ISD for many of his years.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; as well as other family members, Bernice Woolrey, Jerome Friedel, Agnes Reiss, Frank Friedel, Jr., Georgie Fischer, Robert Friedel, Leroy Friedel, and Katy Schubert.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vivian Friedel of Plum; sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard James and Jan Friedel of Plum, Mark and Sharron Friedel of La Grange, Myron Friedel of Round Rock, Lucas and Mindy Friedel of Mansfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Don Hinkley of Round Rock, Sherry and Don Ard of Muldoon; brother Joe Friedel of Cypress. Grandchildren include: Dustin Hammit, Ashleigh Fulcher, Ryan Kelly, Kaleb Kenneth Wayne Friedel, Jessica Sanchez, Morgan Hart, Howard Colton Ard, Molly Friedel, Maggie Friedel, Luke Bernard Friedel and seven great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dustin Hammit, Ryan Kelly, Howard Colton Ard, Kaleb Friedel, Bradley Friedel, and Randy Woolrey. Tristan Hammit will serve as Honorary Pallbearer.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.
