Chemical Leak Forces Evacuation in Schulenburg

UPDATE 4:30 p.m: Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau said the hazmat team has cleared the scene at the Pilot Truck Stop in Schulenburg. The area is safe for residents to return. Moreau said the person injured earlier was a Schulenburg first responder who was exposed to the chemical and developed shortness of breath. That person was transported to Columbus Community Hospital for treatment and has been released, he said.

Verlene Kuntschihk Benefit Sunday

A benefit for Verlene Kuntschik will take place at Mullins Prairie Store on July 17. Kuntschik was the parishioner at Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn who died from the injuries she suffered in the church fire last month.

Deputies Recover Stolen Pickup

On Wednesday, July 6, at approximately 12:25 a.m., Deputies Seth Nagel and A.J. Gonzales conducted a traffic stop on SH 71 near Old Lockhart Road on a grey Ford F-150 for a moving violation. The deputies discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen out of Seabrook just hours prior to the stop. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle complied with commands to exit the vehicle. Joseph Delrio of Crosby was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.

Schulenburg Police Arrest Austin Couple for Marijuana and Gun

On Thursday, July 7, at approximately 8:28 pm, Officers with the Department conducted a traffic stop in the 600 blk Lyons Ave. on a green Ford F-150 for a traffic violation. Officers developed probable cause and a search of the vehicle was conducted. A usable amount of Marijuana, large amount of THC, and a firearm were located in the vehicle. Casey Quintanilla, 37 of Austin, was arrested for possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying a weapon. Stephanie Young-Quintanilla, 40 of Austin, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. Both subjects were transported to the Fayette County Jail for booking. NVCC Senior Center Hears from Whose Ranch Owners

The month of June is gone and July is coming on fast. The center welcomed Julius and Clara Bartek as the lunch and learn series speakers on the last Monday of June. “The 3 Asses Ranch” that they live on has been recognized by the State of Texas as a Heritage Ranch. This means that their ranch has been in continuous operation for 100 years. They told members about their ranch, how the house was built in 1866 and that is what they inherited.
