1973: Narrow Escape for Concrete Truck and Driver

After a truck loaded with concrete drove across Bullfrog Branch Bridge south of La Grange, it collapsed. Neither the truck nor the driver sustained as much as a scratch in what could have been a serious incident last week. Precinct 3 Commissioner Eddie Zouzalik decided to construct a low-water crossing with a culvert until the main structure could be rebuilt with new steel that was on order.

St. Mary 73rd Annual Bazaar Sunday, Aug. 27

St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellinger will host their 73rd annual Bazaar on Sunday, Aug. 27. Starting at 10:30 a.m. there will be a drive-thru and dine-in meal at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall consisting of fried chicken, sausage and trimmings for $15 per plate. There will be a silent auction as well as a live miniauction with a limited number of items. Zach Novak will play Polka music for your enjoyment.

Blinn Sees Increase In Enrollment

The Blinn College District’s summer II enrollment increased six percent over the previous year, Vice Chancellor for Student Services Dr. Becky McBride reported to the Board of Trustees during its August meeting on Tuesday.

Connor Menefee recently graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Tarleton State University at Stephenville. Connor is the daughter of Mike and Anissa Menefee of La Grange, and the granddaughter of Curtis and the late Leni Ann Simmons of La Grange and the late Frank Sr. and Betty Menefee.

Shelter Has Over 100 Animals In Care

As of Aug. 11, total intake for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 1093: 522 dogs and 571 cats in need. As of Aug. 11, the shelter has 114 animals in care: 56 dogs/58 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport to rescue partner. The shelter offers a discount voucher program to the citizens of Fayette County for the spay/neuter of family pets. Call (979) 966-0021 for more information.
