Nov. 22, 1963 When JFK Was Shot and Killed ‘Nation Mourns JFK’s Death’ read the prominent black headline on the front page of the Tuesday, Nov.

Local volunteers collected 81 Thanksgiving baskets for families in need. Each basket contains everything needed for a traditional family Thanksgiving meal. The Holy Smokers men’s group of St. James Episcopal Church provided a smoked turkey for each basket. Local nurse Laurie Quitta helped to organize the effort. In prior year’s St. Mark’s Medical Center organized the effort. But now that the hospital has closed, Tejas Health Care of La Grange became the collection point. The Family Crisis Center identified the families in need and will deliver the baskets.

This Thursday families will gather around the dinner table for Thanksgiving, and for most families, a big turkey will be the center of the meal. There are plenty of ways to ruin a good thanksgiving sibling squabbles, football rivalries and the like.

Second Chance Emporium will accept donations on Nov. 20-22 from 8 a.m.
