March 2, 1971 Holding off a couple of enemy comebacks, the Round Top-Carmine senior-less Cubettes clinched their second Class B girls’ basketball state championship in Austin, 48-33, over the Grandview Zebras. In the state semi-finals, Floyd Etzel’s Cubettes came out of an early deficit to beat Wells, 68-30, while Grandview defeated Follett, 50-47.

Garbage collection services are getting caught up following the historic winter storm that halted pickups for more than a week throughout most of Fayette County. La Grange City Manager Shawn Raborn said his city’s garbage contractor, Waste Management, stopped running trucks on Thursday Feb.

Local propane companies experienced their busiest week in years during the recent winter storm. Rodney Sladek of Fayetteville Propane and Wendy Fietsam of Tex Propane in Schulenburg said their phones never stopped ringing during the storm as customers kept their heaters turned up.

• Many local folks begin getting their electric bills last week, with people reporting higher than usual costs (multiple folks have said its about double their monthly average) but not the astronomical jumps some people have reported in other areas of the state.

During the rolling blackouts caused by the winter storm two weeks ago, some areas of Fayette County never lost power while others had power for only a few hours over the course of three days. Lots of folks have been wondering who decides which lines get cut during such events.

Alex Henley, owner and head instructor at La Grange Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, opened his new gym in La Grange on Saturday, Feb. 27. The gym is located across from the courthouse at 240 W. Colorado Street (the old Hallmark Store). The gym offers one free week of instruction to anyone who wants to try it out. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a style of martial arts that emphasizes submissions and ground fighting. Henley said his gym teaches both the self defense and competitive sport aspects of the fighting style. Fayette County Commissioners Court passed another 14-day extension to the local disaster declaration related to COVID-19 at a meeting Thursday, Feb. 25. The occasion marked a year since the Commissioners first declared the disaster.
