VFW Auxiliary Post 5254 Meets April 21 By Teleconference

Officers and members of the VFW Auxiliary Post 5254 voted to hold their April 21 meeting using the teleconference model with Vicki Latapie presiding.

Opening prayer was said and other rituals were not held. Six officers and two members participated in the conference call. Reports from Treasurer Anna Boyd, Secretary Marilyn Kothmann and two committee members were e-mailed to those participating prior to the conference call. The treasurer’s report, along with one correction to the minutes, was approved. Important to veterans is the Legislative Report by Elizabeth Kalins taken from the VFW Action Corps Weekly which included the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced the identifications of American servicemen who had been missing and unaccounted for from the Korean War and WWII. Returning home for burial with full military honors were 17 servicemen, 13 from WWII and four from the Korean War. She also shared the VA released tip sheet on the “Caregiver Support Program Information for Caregivers During COVID-19.” During this time of social distancing, the tip sheet provides reminders of how to prepare: create a back-up plan, protect yourself, protect others, monitor yourself and the veteran for symptoms and be aware of the additional caregiver support program resources. Kallus’ Americanism report focused on the history and meaning of “Taps.”

Under new business, President Vicki Latapie announced that the National Convention which was to be held in Reno in July has been cancelled. She also told members the District 28 meeting was moved from May 3 to June 7 in Leander and that it could possibly be a virtual meeting. A motion was made and passed that the $10 donation in memory of our deceased member Marlene Schneider, who passed away March 19, be given to our VFW Auxiliary Dept. of Texas, Veterans and Family Support and unmet needs. The meeting concluded with a prayer.

The May 19 meeting will again be held via teleconference at 6 p.m.
