Two Taylor ISD Students Killed in ATV Accident

• The Lee County Sheriff’s Office assisted Williamson County on May 16 following an ATV accident that injured one and took the life of two young people, all reportedly students in Taylor ISD. The deputies responded to CR 482 in Williamson County, just northwest of the Lee County line. When they arrived, CPR was in progress on at least one of the victims. The deceased victims were identified as 15-year-old Tyler Cobb and 13-year-old Jace Gill. No other details about the accident were available.

• Heavy downpours on May 15 caused higher water than a local mail carrier expected which resulted in her rescue around 1 p.m. on May 16. Grimes County authorities said they were dispatched to the 1200 block of County Road 112, near Iola. They observed the vehicle sinking and slowly moving off the roadway. The carrier said she underestimated the depth of the water. She was rescued without incident, but her vehicle wasn’t retrieved until the water receded Saturday night. The mail carrier was driving her personal vehicle and not a United States Postal Service vehicle, as is the case with many rural county carriers. She suffered no injuries.

• A DPS trooper’s SUV suffered extensive damage to the driver’s side in an accident on Hwy. 77 north of the loop in Lexington on May 12 at 2:30 p.m. DPS Trooper Cameron Janda was transported by ambulance to the hospital with a concussion and other injuries after Lexington firemen used Jaws of Life equipment to rip off the passenger side doors to free him. A full report about the crash has not been provided by DPS because their computer system has been out of service for several days.
• County Judge Paul Fischer and his staff recently had to deal with abandoned dogs. The dog issue started on May 10 when the sheriff’s office received a call about three Rat Terriers that had been abandoned by their owners at the intersection of CR 205 and 207. All three dogs were caught during the week and turned over to the Giddings Animal Shelter. The penalty for anyone convicted of abandoning a dog or charged with cruelty to animals can range from a misdemeanor to a felony.
• Besides the dogs, County officials had to deal with other issues. “Someone had thrown some dead goats into the Middle Yegua Creek on CR 304,” said Judge Fischer. The County also had to deal with picking up a dead horse on Hwy. 290 west just outside the city limit behind El Dorado.
• Kaitlyn Washington, 20 of Lexington, fled from local officers in her vehicle and has a warrant out for her arrest on felony charges. Detective Steve Spencer with the Giddings Police Department spotted a vehicle at Hempstead Street and Hwy. 77 that had been involved in a forgery case in April 2020. Patrol officers were notified on May 14 of the vehicle’s location and they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Hwy. 290 at Dallas Street. The driver sped away and after further pursuit the vehicle was not located. The suspect’s vehicle is a white 2020 Chevrolet Camaro.
