Trio of Fires, a Rollover and Toxic Fumes – All in One Day
The La Grange Volunteer Fire Department stayed busy Tuesday, Oct. 20, with three fire calls, a rollover and a household chemical spill.
The first call came in around 11:09 a.m. reporting a small grass fire on Hausmann Gin Rd. People at the property were burning a pile of brush that got out of control. It burned about ¼ acre of grass by the time firefighters got there.
Then around 3:30 p.m., they got a call reporting another grass fire on Bridge Valley Rd. Someone at the property was burning a brush fire and it got out of control. Strong winds that afternoon sent the flames into a hay field. About five acres of grass burned before firefighters got it under control. La Grange VFD responded with two tankers and two brush trucks.
Just as the fire department finished up at Bridge Valley Rd., they got a call report-ing toxic fumes in a house on Northpoint Ave. Fire Chief Frank Menefee said someone in the house had mixed some household cleaners, including bleach. The mixture spilled and the fumes forced the occupants out of the house. Firefighters used fans to ventilate the home.
Shortly after 5 p.m., a vehicle rollover occurred on SH 159 near Weeren Storage in La Grange. The La Grange Fire Department conducted traffic control while Fayette County EMS treated injuries. EMS transported two people from the scene, one to South Austin Medical Center and the other to Seton Smithville Hospital.
Then around 7:30 p.m., La Grange VFD got a call reporting heavy smoke on Rueter Rd. in the Rutersville area. Menefee said someone had left some fires unattended and the smoke alarmed some residents in the area. The flames were not threatening anything, however, so the fire department took no action, Menefee said.
