Town of Round Top Planning 150th Anniversary Celebration
The Round Top Sesquicentennial Committee, with endorsement of the Round Top Town Council, announced plans to host a 150th Anniversary Celebration, held in the town’s square on August 1. This all-day event kicks off at 10 a.m. and promises to honor the heritage and founding of Round Top with community spirit, historical presentations, live music, local food and family-friendly recreation.
“We are thrilled to celebrate Round Top! Our town has such a rich German history and over its 150 years, its specialness has been discovered by many who have fallen in love with the magical pull of our community. The Round Top area is filled with immense historical beauty and local talent, which we are thrilled to showcase on our Square all day long. We welcome locals and visitors alike to join in on the festivities on August 1st.” said Amy Bone, Co-Chair of Round Top’s Sesquicentennial Committee.
With 150 years in the making, the upcoming anniversary celebration is already proving to be one of the town’s biggest community-supported events in recent history. Sponsorships from local businesses, community leaders and the Town Council have exceeded expectations, allowing the Sesquicentennial Committee to coordinate multiple forms of quality entertainment scheduled throughout the event. “Our committee members have been working hard to ensure there is really is something for everyone to enjoy during the celebratory weekend,” explained Bone. “From the first-ever Two County Barbecue Showdown, the Historical Home Tours and Presentations, to live music on the Square and in the beautiful Festival Hill Concert Hall, bringing in an internationally-known ventriloquist and firetruck water spray especially for the kids, to Saturday Night’s Dance in our Historic Dancehall, we plan to make it a party everyone will remember for years to come.”
One of the event’s biggest highlights, the first ever “Two County Barbecue Showdown” will be held in Henkel Hall during the anniversary celebration and invites the first 200 lucky ticket-holders to taste and judge all entries. “We are so excited to showcase the best of the best local barbecue teams from Fayette and Washington County as they compete head to head for ultimate bragging rights in our area.” said host of the showdown and celebrated Round Top chef, JB Royer.
To further enhance the 150th Anniversary Celebration, a historical folio entitled “Round Top – Next Stop!” is being compiled and written by author Sally Reynolds, a Round Top resident. With the endorsement of the Round Top Town Council and Sesquicentennial Committee, the 48-page booklet will highlight Round Top’s history as well as a collection of personal memories generously shared by local residents with interesting stories to tell. In addition to being gifted to the area libraries and archives, the Fayette County Record will publish 10,000 copies of the folio, included in the July 21 edition of the paper, as well as present a copy to each student of the Round Top/Carmine ISD.
