Tips for Burning Safely

Stephen Kelly, President of the Fayette County Firefighter’s Association, offers these guidelines for people to go by while they are burning outdoors (when a burn ban is not in place):

• Burn early in the morning when the humidity is higher

• Do not burn on windy days.

• Have a water source nearby if possible

• Call the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office at (979) 968-5856 and tell them you will be burning and give them your address and contact information.

• Clear the area around the material you intend to burn

• Do not leave the fire at any time

• Expect the wind to change direction and increase at any time

• Call 911 early if the fire gets out of control. Do not hesitate. Small fires turn into large uncontrollable fires very quickly. Give precise directions to the fire and if possible have someone meet the fire department at the road.
