Texas Heroes Day Student Art & Writing Contest Details Finalized
The Friends of Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites are pleased to announce the 2020 Texas Heroes Day Student Art & Creative Writing Contest. Texas Heroes Day honors the men entombed at Monument Hill—Republic of Texas soldiers who were killed during the ill-fated Dawson and Mier Expeditions (1842-1843).
The Friends welcome Texas students to reflect on this history through original works of art and creative writing. Any Texas elementary school-aged or middle school-aged student is welcome to participate, including private, public and homeschooled students. Art and creative writing can be completed at home and submitted via email. Instructions, prompts, entry forms, and historical resources can be found at www.friendsofkreischebrewery.com/texasheroesday. Submissions are due by 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. Winners will be announced during Texas Heroes Day on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Cash prizes will be awarded in each of the following categories: elementary school visual art, elementary school creative writing, middle school visual art, and middle school creative writing. Students interested in submitting visual art should be inspired by the theme, “Making Memories at Monument Hill.” Art submissions may include drawings, sketches, paintings, photography, sculptures, models, and more. Students interested in submitting a creative writing piece should be inspired by the theme, “Soldier Stories: Tales from the Men of the Daw-son and Mier Expeditions.” Creative writing might include essays, short stories, poetry, plays, and more.
“The stories of Monument Hill are an important part of our local and state history,” says Friends Board President Katy Beauford. “We’re excited to see how our local students commemorate Monument Hill and Texas Heroes Day through art and creative writing.”
Due to current events, this year’s Texas Heroes Day will be entirely virtual. Event programs and activities will be accessed on social media and the Friends webpage. Additional detail will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Friends of Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites is the key partner of the Texas Historical Commission in supporting education and interpretation programs, community outreach, education and interpretation programs, and other important Sites initiatives. Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites are two of 31 historic sites operated by the Texas Historical Commission. These sites tell the real stories of Texans who made and remade Texas—a product of immigration, ingenuity, enterprise, risk, and sacrifice. Kreische Brewery shares the stories of German immigrant Heinrich Kreische, a well-regarded stonemason who built and operated one of the earliest commercial breweries in Texas.
Monument Hill preserves the burial place of Republic of Texas soldiers who died in the Dawson Massacre and ill-fated Mier Expedition (“Black Bean Episode”). The sites also offer recreational opportunities for hiking, picnicking, scenic views, and nature experiences.
