Smithville Invites Visitors to Slow Down and Stay Awhile Oct. 2-4
After a successful first gathering, Smithville’s First Saturday fall series returns Oct. 3 in the middle of a full Oct. 2-4 weekend of music, treasure hunting, local history, shopping, dining and plenty of reasons to stay the night.
Smithville Railroad Park settled into a comfortable Saturday- morning rhythm Sept. 5 as families, friends, visitors and classic-car enthusiasts gathered for the first fall Meet Me at the Depot, presented by the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce.
There was live music at the gazebo, classic cars around the park, trolley rides, activities for kids and plenty of conversation under the trees. Visitors could sit down and handwrite a Smithville postcard to someone they cared about, leaving the mailing to the Chamber.
But the morning was intentionally less about packing a schedule and more about giving people a reason to slow down and spend a little time together.
That simple idea is at the heart of Meet Me at the Depot a First Saturday fall series meant to bring people together at Railroad Park and give them a reason to slow down, stay awhile, and enjoy Smithville at an easier pace.
The gathering also gives visitors an easy starting point for exploring the rest of town. Downtown merchants reported noticing an increase in foot traffic and sales during the Sept. 5 morning, reinforcing the idea that a few hours at Railroad Park can carry visitors into local shops, restaurants and the rest of Smithville.
Feedback from downtown merchants after the Sept. 5 gathering was positive, with businesses reporting increased foot traffic and sales during the morning.
Visit Smithville is extending that same invitation across the weekend: Slow Down, Stay Awhile: Spend the Weekend the Smithville Way. Come in Friday, ease into Saturday with plenty to see and do at your own pace, and stay long enough to let Sunday morning unfold without watching the clock.
Friday, Oct. 2, gives travelers an easy reason to arrive early: the Smithville Music Festival begins at 6 p.m. downtown. Check in, grab dinner, wander Main Street and settle in for an evening of free live music. Musical schedule and acts can be found at stxmusicfestival.com.
Saturday starts early with two treasure-hunting options: Smithville’s Community-Wide Garage Sale from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., plus Smithville Fall Market Days at the American Legion from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., featuring more than 70 vendors, vintage finds, handmade goods, local makers, food options and a coffee truck. Meet Me at the Depot follows from 9 a.m. to noon, while the Smithville Heritage House & Museum opens house tours from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. After the Depot, visitors can grab lunch, browse downtown shops, keep treasure hunting and return to Main Street as the Smithville Music Festival continues into Saturday, starting at 1:30 p.m.
And the weekend does not have to end Saturday night. Visitors who stay over can ease into Sunday with a walk, breakfast or an early trip to nearby Buescher State Park, then head back to James H. Long Railroad Park for the Smithville Sunday Farmer’s Market from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., with local growers, makers, artisans and live music.
Lodging, dining, shopping and other local activities are available through VisitSmithvilleTX. org.
The October Meet Me at the Depot will again feature the relaxed mix that shaped the September gathering: a casual classic-car cruise-in, trolley rides, activities for children, railroad stories and plenty of room to visit with neighbors old and new.
Live music under the gazebo will feature Cody Cotton and Frank Cavitt & Friends, adding another easy soundtrack to a morning built more around lingering than rushing. There is no admission, and there is no complicated schedule to follow.
Come for the music. Bring the kids. Look at the cars. Take a trolley ride. Write a postcard. Sit down for a game of checkers or dominoes. Enjoy some cold lemonade. Then wander downtown. Find a garage-sale treasure. Tour the Heritage House. Get some lunch. Browse the shops. Stay for the music festival. Spend the night. And on Sunday, stop by the market before you finally point the car toward home.
