Round Rock Man Injured After Overpass Fall

A man from Round Rock suffered serious injuries after either jumping or falling from an overpass bridge in La Grange Tuesday night, June 28.

La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath said the episode began with a vehicle crash on State Highway 71 Bypass around 9:33 p.m. Gilbreath said a white Chevy Malibu was traveling westbound on the bypass when it went off the highway and into the grass. The driver over-corrected and crashed into the concrete barrier.

When La Grange Police officers arrived to investigate the crash, the driver was missing. Officers called for a tow truck to haul off the car and left the scene.

Then around 10:11 p.m., officers responded to a call at the intersection of SH 71 Bypass and SH 159 about a subject standing on the overpass bridge. When officers arrived, they found a subject standing on the rail of the bridge and refusing to come down.

Gilbreath said officers identified the man as 29-year-old Sergio Ramos of Round Rock and determined that he was the driver of the crashed Malibu. Gilbreath said the man appeared to be intoxicated by some unknown substance.

“Officers tried to talk him down several times, but the subject refused and he either jumped and fell off the bridge,” Gilbreath said.

The man sustained injuries to his hips, back and head, Gilbreath said. Fayette County EMS arrived and began treating Ramos. A medical helicopter from PHI transported Ramos to Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin. He remained hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon, June. 29.
