The Rev. Wilbert Edgar Doerr, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church at Warrenton and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Shelby, was named the state’s second place 1959 Rural Minister of the Year at the 15th annual Rural Church Conference held at Texas A&M College.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Loessin announced the reopening of the Sky-Hi Drive-In Theatre. Weekend shows for the following four weeks were: The World, The Flesh and The Devil, starring Mel Ferrer and Harry Belafonte; The Doctor’s Dilemma, starring Leslie Caron and Dick Bogarde; The Mating Game, starring Debbie Reynolds and Paul Douglas; and The Last Voyage, starring Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone. The box office opened at 7 p.m. sharp.
Jimmy Holub tossed two-hit ball as his La Grange mates were getting six to defeat Flatonia, 4-0, in a Tri-County Babe Ruth tilt in La Grange. The big bat of Jimmy Trlicek aided materially in La Grange’s win. He batted in the first run with a double, set up another with a single, and scored twice himself. Trlicek had a record of 10 hits in 18 at bat. L. Hermis was close at Trlicek’s heels with a double and single, the latter bringing in the final two tallies.
The defendant in a divorce case was ordered by District Judge J. Lee Dittert to provide $40 per month in support for his two children.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold H. Knippel announced the purchase of the G-K Restaurant from Mr. and Mrs. G. Kaley. The business, located on Hwy. 71 west, was to be renamed the H-Way Restaurant. After new air conditioning equipment was installed and other improvements were completed, it was scheduled to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A religious service in the German language was being broadcast over Radio Station KVLG by Holy Cross Lutheran Church at Warda. Pastor Hartfield planned to base his sermon on Hebrews 10:31. The choir, under the direction of H.W. Stroebel, was to sing Groszer Gott wir loben dir; O dasz ich tausend Zungen haette; and Es ist noch Raum.
Ernest Williams began duty as a sales clerk at Farmers Lumber Co.
Marine S/Sgt. Erwin J. Cernoch, son of Mr. and Mrs. John K. Cernoch of Rt. 3, La Grange, graduated from the Drill Instructor School at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Midshipman 2C Ernest R. Kallus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kallus of La Grange, completed two weeks of amphibious warfare training at Norfolk, Va. Lt. (jg) and Mrs. John Weldon Koenig arrived in Houston by plane to spend two weeks leave with Mr. and Mrs. John H. Koenig and Rodney of Rt. 1, La Grange, and Mr. and Mrs. George Sowa of Corpus Christi. Lt. (jg) Koenig had recently graduated from the U.S. Naval Submarine School at New London, Connecticut. He had been chosen by Admiral Rickover to attend the Nuclear Power School in New London for an additional six months. SFC Leroy M. Meyer and SP4 Leslie L. Meyer, both of whom attended high school in Fayetteville, completed two weeks of annual active duty training at Fort Eustis, Va. They were assigned to the 719th Transportation Battalion in Houston.
Arrangements were being made to host as many as 300 people expected to attend the veterans of World War I meeting at the American Legion Hall hosted by the La Grange Barracks.
Funerals were held for: Henry Wieting, 40, a Fayette County native; John H. Coufal, 74, of Willow Springs; Nora Vanderwerth, 62, of Ledbetter; and A.G. McNeese, 77, of La Grange.
Despite the much-needed rain that fell through most of the evening, there was a full house when the Fayetteville Masonic Lodge observed its centennial. Walter P. Freytag, past master and secretary of LaFayette Lodge No. 34, AF&AM, served as master of ceremonies at the banquet. Vocal entertainment was presented by Miss Lucy Jo Conn, accompanied by Miss Jo Helen Cronenberger.
Monument Hill State Park manager John P. Vacula reported that the park’s 239-foot well should produce an adequate supply of water once its pump was worked over.
The Colorado Valley Telephone Cooperative Board of Directors hired Frank Reichert and Edward B. Meyer Jr. on a full-time basis to obtain easements. Anyone desiring service in the Hostyn, Mullins Prairie, O’Quinn, Plum, Warda or Winchester sections still could make application and pay the membership fee of $10 to have a telephone installed in their home.
