The Round Top Rifle Association said it is “cautiously proceeding” with plans for this year’s 170th July 4th Celebration.

Governor Greg Abbott last Friday issued new executive orders banning gatherings of over 100 people statewide unless organizers get permission from local authorities. County Judge Joe Weber gave his blessing to the Round Top event last week.

“While maintaining this long-standing tradition is important, the safety and well-being of our community and visitors is more important,” Round Top organizers said in a statement released on Sunday, June 28.

The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. with the firing of a replica Civil War-era cannon. Organizers limited the number of parade entries this year to 60 and lengthened the parade route to enable groups of people to socially distance themselves. Parade participants will not be allowed to toss candy, trinkets or other items to the crowd. Spectators are asked to watch the parade from inside or near to their vehicles along the parade route. Groups should stay six feet away from each other, and face masks are encouraged. The traditional barbecue chicken and sausage meal will be served after the parade at the Round Top Rifle Hall. About 750 meals will be prepared. Meals will be packaged in to-go containers. The meals will be available for drive-through pick-up at about 11 a.m. Meals will be served until 1:30 p.m., or until they run out.

Frisch Auf Valley Country Club plans to hold a fireworks show on July 4. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. The club encourages attendees to watch the show from their vehicles and wear face masks when outside. Groups should include family members and no more than 10 people. The club said vehicles should spread out and park along any of the roads around the golf course.

The Fourth of July Picnic in St. John south of Schulenburg has been cancelled.
