Recycling Center Poised To Re-Open Next Week

The Fayette County Recycle Center will resume regular operations next week.

The Recycle Center stopped taking recyclables on April 4 over concerns that the coronavirus could spread on materials such as cardboard and plastic. Pct. 4 Commissioner Tom Muras, who oversees the county’s recycling program, told the Record on Tuesday, May 5, that the Recycle Center would get back to its normal schedule next week.

The Center in La Grange is open Tuesday through Saturday. The recycling station in Schulenburg is open on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Collection points in Fayetteville, Flatonia, Round Top, Ledbetter, Carmine and Ellinger will also reopen next week. “We want to urge people to sort their recycleables before going to the Center so that we can minimize contact,” Muras said. “We’re also asking people to wear a mask when they come. We’re trying to make it safe for everyone.”

Muras said the staff at the Recycle Center stayed busy sandblasting and repainting equipment during the shutdown.

Before the shutdown, the Recycle Center was having a hard time finding markets for some of the recycled material. In some cases, Muras said, the County was paying to get rid of items. Muras said the market for recycleables has actually strengthened during the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, he said, the County is having a much easier time finding buyers for recycled materials.

The Recycling Center is located at 210 Svoboda Lane in La Grange.
