Record Welcomes New Warda News Correspondent

Last week was Gladys Giese’s last column as news correspondent for the Warda news. She began writing the weekly column at approximately 15 years of age. She stopped briefly while living in Houston, but picked back up again in the 1970s. We are grateful for her work and dedication over these many years.

My name is Lisa Gay and I will be attempting to fill Gladys’ shoes by taking over as your new correspondent. I was born and raised in Giddings and spent most of my adult life in the hustle and bustle of the Houston area. After selling my auction business, I did what I said I would never do ... I moved back. When I’m not working in the kitchen at Camp Tejas you can find me enjoying this beautiful area with my husband John. We love our cows, country life and the friendliness of the small communities here that offer so many unique things to do.

Under New Ownership

The owners of Bluff Creek Ranch in Warda, Dr. Paul and Susan Nolan, sold their property after 30 years on May 29. The ranch is known for its exquisite mountain biking trails and longhorn cattle. The new owners are Breck and Jeannine Powers. The Powers are from Cypress and are both mountain biking enthusiast. Breck does custom home building and remodeling. The plans for the ranch are to continue the biking and raising and selling of longhorn beef. With the COVID-19 pandemic they are seeing more people coming to the ranch, due to the fact that many state and local parks are closed. With 148 acres they are easily able to social distance people. The June 28 time trial race is still on schedule, this is a USA Cycling Association sanctioned event of 150 maximum riders. The running race in November is still on schedule, as well. We welcome the Powers to the Warda area and wish the Nolan’s the best of life as they do some traveling in their RV. The Nolan’s want everyone to know how much they have loved living in Warda and enjoying the openness and friendliness of everyone in Fayette Country.

Waiser Named Valedictorian

Tabitha Waiser named valedictorian of Lutheran High North in Houston. She has been a student there since her freshman year of high school. She found out about being honored as valedictorian at the beginning of her senior year when she logged into the school’s online network. “I had no idea I was valedictorian until that day,” Waiser said. “It took me by complete surprise, and it actually made me anxious because after seeing that I was the top of the class, I really wanted to keep that spot.”

Waiser said students have received an email from LHN principal Dana Gerard that graduation will be held virtually on Zoom. Waiser understands the necessity of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, but says it’s also hard.

“I really wanted my whole family to be there cheering me on as I walked across the stage to get my diploma,” she said. Waiser’s favorite classes were theology and English.

Waiser was involved in varsity basketball all four years of high school and also played volleyball from her freshman through junior years. Waiser is going to the University of Houston in the fall and plans to major in nursing.

Waiser is the daughter of Brian and Amy Zoch Waiser of Houston and the granddaughter of Eugene and Barbara Zoch of Warda. Both of Waisers parents were graduates of Lutheran North as well.
