Q&A With Schulenburg Senior Julia Oeding
We caught up with Julia Oeding, a senior at Schulenburg High School to talk about the unusual ending to the senior year for the class of 2020:
Please discuss the typical senior year activities which have been canceled at your school this spring... banquets, prom and so forth.
A typical senior spring semester consists of busy schedules and enjoying the last few months with friends. However, for the class of2020 it has been anything but typical. Our class was lucky enough to experience our senior prom, but many other activities were cut short. Spring sports ended much sooner than expected. The banquets, FFA, academic and athletic, all exciting nights for seniors leaving their favorite activities, have been cancelled.
Are there any plans for virtual activities?
I am very grateful to everyone at Schulenburg High School who has been working hard to honor our senior class. There have been many virtual activities, for example, each day a different senior athlete and FFA member is celebrated. There has also been a virtual athletic banquet to recognize all athletes.
What are your postgraduate plans: summer/college how have they been affected?
In the fall I plan on attending Austin Community College to study Business Management and pursue a career in the floral industry. As of right now that plan hasn’t changed, but I’m trying to stay flexible and open to any changes that could occur. This summer I was looking forward to serving as a team member on Teen ACTS which has been cancelled.
What’s the worst thing about all this?
Personally, I would say not getting to spend this time with friends has been the hardest. We are missing out on so many important memories before we go separate ways.
What’s the best thing?
I consider the extra time spent with family and the extra time to focus on my future the biggest blessing at a time like this.
How would you characterize the morale of your fellow seniors and yourself?
I think at a time like this it is hard for anyone to keep a positive outlook. As for the class of 2020, it is especially hard as things are being cancelled all around us. However, my fellow seniors and I will continue to be there for one another and come out stronger in the end.
