NVCC Resumes Dominos, Bingo with Precautions

Navidad Valley Community Connections (NVCC) is reopening for dominos Mondays and Wednesdays beginning at 10 a.m. each day. For confirmation call Carol Ann at (281) 923-6582. NVCC will also resume bingo games at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 at the VFW Hall in Schulenburg. NVCC is set up for social distancing and proper handwashing. Temperatures will be checked prior to entering along with a brief questionnaire. Face masks are required. If you need a face mask, call Nancy at (979) 561-5092. NVCC will not be resuming the congregate dining service until a green light is received from Craig Moreau at the Fayette County Office of Emergency Management.

NVCC would like to remind the community about the Drug Takeback Program in Schulenburg. NVCC initiated the program with the Schulenburg Police Department last August, so it’s been in effect for a year now. The program provides a place for disposal of expired or excess medication, both prescription and nonprescription, in a secure location. For Schulenburg, that location is the lobby of the Schulenburg Police Department. While you must wear a mask at this time, you do not need to interact with anyone, just drop off medications in the metal box. The medications are taken to La Grange for proper disposal in an incinerator. One of the important reasons for this program, aside from not contaminating our water system by flushing them down the toilet, is to reduce the supply of drugs that can potentially harm children, teens and adults.

According to a 2011 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), more than six million Americans abuse prescription drugs. Among youth who are 12-17 years old, 7.4% report use of prescription drugs; usually acquired from someone else’s medicine cabinet.

Properly disposing of excess drugs is everyone’s responsibility as a matter of public safety. More than 70% of young people abusing painkillers get them from friends or family, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet. Since a disposal location is now available, no one has to wait to dispose of these meds.

The ladies from NVCC are still making masks. Now, most are custom masks for both children and adults. The ladies can use cording, elastic or ties, whichever type you prefer and can add some “bling” or school or team colors and personalize them. This is currently the only source of income at this time for NVCC. Your business is appreciate.
