Minor League Players Face Uncertain Future

Minor League Baseball announced Wednesday that the 2020 season will be cacelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. This marks the first time since 1901 that minor league baseball will not be played in America.

Major League baseball plans to hold a 60-game season with an expanded 60-player roster for each team. That might give a few minor leaguers a chance to play this year.

Among Fayette County minor leaguers, pitcher Trey Supak had perhaps the best chance to play this year. Drafted in 2014 and signed by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2016, Supak has a career 3.48 earned run average in the minors. He made the Brewer’s 40-man roster last season but never got called up.

Milwaukee could have named 60 players to its roster this season, but on Monday, the team chose to list only 45 players to start summer camp before the abbreviated season begins later this month. Supak did not make the list.

Supak got off to a good start last season in Double-A, posting a 2.20 ERA in 20 starts for the Biloxi Shuckers. He got called up to Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate, the San Antonio Missions, where he lost two of his three starts and finished with a 9.30 ERA. This season looked promising for Supak, however, especially after he threw three scoreless innings in spring training before the season got postponed.

The Brewers plan to announce a full 60-man roster at a later date.
