LGISD Has Its 1st COVID Case Of the New Year

La Grange Independent School District had its first confirmed case of coronavirus since the start of this new school year Friday when the district received word that a sixth grade student had tested positive for the virus.

“The student has remained home since symptom onset,” La Grange superintendent Bill Wager said in a message sent to all elementary parents.

Twenty-two students who were believed to have had close contact with the student were sent home immediately Friday morning.

Initially the parents of those 22 students were informed that they would have to stay home until Sept. 8, based on recommendations from the Texas Department of State Health Services (Region 7) officials, said La Grange superintendent Bill Wagner.

But after future communication with State Health Services officials, LGISD got an update Friday afternoon stating that all those students could return to classes Monday provided that were not suffering from any coronavirus symptoms.

Wagner said the change in the state’s recommendation came about after learning about the distancing and masking requirements LGISD has been operating under for all students.

“They were actually very complimentary of our protocols,” Wagner said.
