Juneteenth Prayer Rally to Be Held in Downtown LG

The Juneteenth on the Square organization is hosting a Prayer Rally Friday, June 19 on the courthouse square in La Grange beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting about an hour.

Speakers will be Louis Zachary, pastor of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and Verlia Mosley.

Organizers are hoping to have a choir and there will also be a reflection time of eight minutes and 46 seconds, which was the time George Floyd was held down by a Minneapolis Police Officer last month before he died.

Refreshments will be served at the event.

Because of coronavirus precautions, attendees are also encouraged to wear masks and practice social distancing guidelines.

Juneteenth celebrations commemorate the day, June 19, 1865, when Emancipation Proclamation— which had been issued on January 1, 1863— was read to enslaved African-Americans in Texas after the end of the American Civil War. Celebrations of the day date back to 1866.
