It’s Still Really Dry Out There

Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department put out a small grass fire Thursday afternoon in Swiss Alp. The fire took place on property along Swiss Alp Dancehall Road.

Fire Chief Jeff Proske said he got the call around 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that an insulator broke on a Fayette Electric Cooperative power line, causing the line to fall. The sagging line sparked a small grass fire.

“Luckily, there wasn’t a lot of grass in that spot, so the fire moved very slowly,” Proske said.

SVFD sent two grass trucks, which quickly put out the fire. There were no reported injuries or damages, other than about two acres of burned grass.

“In this case, there wasn’t anything the property owner could do to prevent what happened,” Proske said. “But it’s starting to get dry again and I hope people are really careful if they’re welding, cutting or doing some work like that outside.”

Fayette County remains under a burn ban.

Proske also reported that SVFD put out a truck that caught fire in the Pilot Truck Stop parking lot in Schulenburg around midnight on Thursday, Aug. 6. Proske said the fire originated at the truck’s axles.

“We were able to get it put out without much damage,” he said.
