Giddings Stabbing Victims Expected to Recover

On Monday morning, June 22, at approximately 8:25 a.m. law enforcement in Giddings received multiple 911 calls regarding people being assaulted by a man with a knife.

Officers located the subject at the intersection of E. Independence and N. Waco while an assault was still in progress. The first arriving officer exited his patrol vehicle. The subject approached the officer with knife in hand.

The officer gave multiple commands for the subject to drop the weapon. The subject continued toward the retreating officer who stumbled backwards on the ground. The subject continued his advance toward the officer and the officer fired his duty weapon, striking the subject three times. Patrol dash camera video captured the encounter. The subject, a 43-year old black male, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Michael York.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the subject with the knife began the assaults south of the intersection of Independence and Highway 77, where he stabbed a 39-year old female multiple times outside her place of work.

The subject then ran north on Highway 77 and entered the Texaco station, where he went behind the counter and stabbed the 62-year old male clerk multiple times. The clerk was able to fight the subject off. The subject then ran out of the store and approached a parked pickup truck with a 49-year old male sitting inside. The subject opened the truck door and stabbed the 49-year old multiple times with the knife. That victim was able to get out of the truck and attempted to flee, while another person in the parking lot attempted to intervene.

The subject then ran west on Independence where he encountered another male victim (age 55) near the intersection of N. Waco and Independence. The subject attacked that victim with the knife, stabbing him several times.

All four stabbing victims were transported to Dell Seton Medica I Center by ambulance and treated for their wounds. All are expected to recover. There is no known motive for the attacks at this time. All of the victims appear to be random.

The officer involved is a 34-year old black male. He has been with the Giddings Police Department for two years and currently holds the rank of sergeant. He has over five years of law enforcement experience. The officer has been placed on administrative leave. An investigation is being led by the Texas Rangers.
