Flatonia’s Central Texas Rail History Center Re-Opens Friday

Massive Model Train Exhibit Has Been Assembled at the Museum

One of the most unique and detailed model train layouts in South Central Texas, if not the entire State, has made its way from Michigan to Flatonia’s downtown Central Texas Rail History Center (CTRHC).

The long journey began just prior to the COVID-19 mandatory shutdown of the CTRHC, when Flatonia resident Greg Kadlub returned to his boyhood home in Dansville, Michigan. He carefully began disassembling the G-Scale train layout in his basement that he and his father, Dr. Karl Kadlub created over a period of 25 years. The massive layout measures approximately 8’ x 24’ and is multi-level. The handmade scenery includes an old West town and mountains reaching up to seven feet in height. The display is filled with sound effects throughout. The layout carries four G-Scale locomotives with an assortment of passenger and freight cars. It took Kadlub approximately three weeks to disassemble the layout and transport it to Flatonia.

Once home, it was a monthlong process to reassemble the trains and tracks and rewire the entire display. All of this took place while the CTRHC was closed during the State’s mandatory shutdown.

Now the museum is ready to reopen, and the new layout is running at full speed. There will be a “Reopening Ribbon Cutting” ceremony to celebrate the occasion on Friday, June 19 at 11 a.m. The public is invited. Social distancing will be in effect and wear a mask or one will be provided.

The CTRHC is located in Flatonia at 104 South Main Street, across from the Post Office. The museum is open every Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. – noon and 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
